US Soldiers to America: ''Bring us home now; we’re dying for oil!"

13-10-2003 20:37

I had the unique opportunity to interview five US military servicemen who just got back from Iraq, or in the case of two men, corresponded with their wives so that I could ask questions of these soldiers by mail. When the two I corresponded with came back just last week, I was able to complete the interviews I started several months ago with some new details on how the war is actually going.

Bolivia smells of insurrection…

translated by Zapata (13/10/2003 14:14)

After resisting 48 hours of slaughter, automatic guns and death, the rebellion of the poor, with its main force in the city of El Alto, has expanded into the whole plateau region, attracting workers, coca growers and peasants of other regions like the valleys and the east. Bolivia smells of insurrection: the poor people are standing up.

2003 September 18 -- Western rural Nepal (location cannot be disclosed for security reasons)

Fog slowly rolls down the hill through the pine trees. I can see eight waterfalls from where I sit, and the quiet immense majesty of Dhaulagiri, one of the highest mountains in the world. I sit in front of the house drinking tea. But the quiet of this scene belies the intense conflict raging here, reflected in daily gun battles, bomb explosions, and existing at all times inside everyone's heart and mind.

Baghdad street kids are crying out for a safe place to sleep

13-10-2003 17:34

The city centre of Baghdad, its once prosperous capital, is haunted today by thousands of street children, who sleep under hedges and bridges and eke out a living, begging from Westerners, soldiers, journalists and members of the non-governmental relief organisations with a presence in the city. Our Home-=Iraq is a new charity set up to organise a safe refuge for these street kids. A fund-raising dinner, presentation and auction is being organised at Anam's Restaurant, Great Horton Road, Bradford, on Monday October 20, tickets £10 from 0776 686 1373.

The Party's Over

13-10-2003 13:37

With the end of the Tory Party Conference last week we saw the end of the boring party political season, at least for the three main political parties. Did the mainstream media have nothing better to report? For the three main parties, it was about power, power for them to retain or gain power. For the Tories and Neo-Labour it was about the leader remaining in power. The people did not figure at all, for Neo-Labour, even their own members did not seem to count.

But it does not always have to be thus. There are alternatives.

Inevitable GM pollution

13-10-2003 10:09

An article from Friday's Daily Mail (10.10.03) outlining the latest research on GM. Interesting quotes revealing the amount of known cross contamination in the UK and affirming that barrier crops don't work.

Although crop trashing has obviously had a powerful safeguarding effect more anti-GM gardeners are obviously needed.
