Is Welsh Planning Policy for Coal about to Hit the Buffers?

The new Welsh Minister for Housing and Regeneration, Mr Carl Seargent, is about to make a decision on the Varteg Hill Opencast site application. If he decides to uphold the Appeal recommendation arising from a recent Public Inquiry it could set a new precedent for how all other Welsh opencast site applications are decided. It could have even wider repercussions across England and Scotland as well. This press release explains why.LAON's Feb-March 2013 of Welsh Opencast Sites

21-03-2013 08:55
Nottingham EDL are trying to shut down a Family Retreat conference at the University of Nottingham for the sole reason that it is being held by Muslims. Calling the organisers "Jihadis" and the event a "hate speech conference" they are encouraging supporters to contact the East Midlands Conference Centre to get the event cancelled and are threatening to hold a demonstration if it goes ahead. In fact, the family event is a very apolitical one, focused mainly on doctrinal issues within Islam. But then the speakers do have beards...
It seems that the EDL only have issues with the event because it is organised by and for Muslims. Of course, if a Muslim group were to protest and try to shut down a Christian event, the EDL would be baying for blood. Apparently, it's alright when it's the other way round though. It seems they are only in favour of their own freedom of speech but want to silence others.
The conference is scheduled to take place from Fri 29 March - Mon 01 April at the East Midlands Conference Centre on Nottingham University's main campus.
PCS Strike & Demo in Nottingham
21-03-2013 08:55
12.30pm Wednesday 20th March 2013. Market Square, Nottingham
Members of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) held a national strike today on Budget Day across the country. To highlight thier concerns over pay, pensions and the governments continued austerity measures.
Leaflets handed out, banners displayed and speeches made. A number of speakers called for a General Strike ..... as opposed to the weak and piecemeal actions and measures, currently being taken by the TUC.
In a statement, PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said:
"Far from being an aspiration nation budget, as the chancellor fatuously called it, it heralds the latest attack on our members who are really struggling financially and yet this government chooses to heap more misery on them.
"The chancellor is sticking rigidly to a plan that penalises public sector workers and runs down the economy.
"This budget also shows an arrogant disregard for the most vulnerable people in society with more than 200,000 more families expected to be thrown into poverty.
"Today’s strike has been a stunning success with many areas reporting their best ever turnouts.
"PCS members have brought the crucial argument against austerity out of the workplaces and into the streets, and have done so in great numbers. If the government continues to refuse to talk to us on crucial issues affecting our members’ livelihoods then we will act again and again."
"Many areas are reporting their best ever turnouts."
The strike will be followed by a half-day national walkout on Friday 5 April and other national and sector-specific strikes and protests over the next three months.
