Public Meeting 7th February

02-02-2011 08:22

Public Meeting: Mon 7th Feb.
Speakers:
• Chris Cuthbert: PCS Union, Lodge House, JobCentre Plus,
• Matt Holinshead: UWE Student Occupation against cuts and fees,
• Roger Davey: Unison Health Group Executive (personal capacity).
7:30 PM, Crosskeys Pub, 627 Fishponds Road. BS16 3BA

Communities in East Bristol and across the country face a devastating attack on our public services, Bristol City Council are planning £30 million in cuts to services -- Unison estimate this means 1,000 jobs being lost. These are not the jobs of highly paid unaccountable bureaucrats but of home care assistants, teachers, refuse collectors and caretakers – people who make our communities tick and care for the most vulnerable in society. The fight back has started. 100,000’s of students marched and occupied against fees and cuts before Christmas. Civil servants in the benefits call centres at Lodge House and elsewhere were on strike on 20th and 21st January and their union voted overwhelmingly (96%) to back a campaign against all cuts. There are important demonstrations in Bristol and London in the next few weeks. If you are one of the millions who depend on public services, not a millionaire who benefits from cuts you should be there too.

Disposal of vital evidence in Mark Stone case?

01-02-2011 20:23

What is going to happen to Mark Stone's mobile phone?

I was very surprised to read in the Evening Post today that the Blackberry mobile phone belonging to undercover cop Mark Stone is to be 'disposed of' by the Crown.

As a vital piece of evidence that might shed light on the issue of whether or not PC Stone had 'gone native' as the police have suggested or whether he was monitored and controlled by his superiors at all times, surely this device should be in the safekeeping of the IPCC?

Bike powered protest against Shell

01-02-2011 18:22

Stop Shell's pipeline to disaster
In Rossport, County Mayo, Shell have just been given planning approval to lay the final section of the high pressure Corrib gas pipeline, ignoring massive local opposition.
Join us taking action against Shell in Bristol. We aim to bring attention to Shell's destructive activities worldwide, so wear bright clothes, bring banners and flags and bikes. Meet Bristol city centre opposite the Hippodrome midday Sat 12th Febuary.
The planned pipeline would run close to people's homes, up the centre of the beautiful Sruwaddacon estuary, (a Special protected area and a Special area of conservation) and over an unstable peat bog. Due to courageous resistance by the local community the project has so far been delayed for a decade and is 3 times over budget - impressive for a rural community fighting one of the biggest multi-nationals in the world.
Throughout, the Irish government has colluded with and supported Shell while ignoring the interests of its own people. The project as it stands will endanger their health, livelihoods and local environment. At a global scale it will also contribute to climate chaos, all for the profit of Shell.
This is just one example of Shell's operations destroying communities and wreckng the environment: from oil extraction in the Niger delta to the tar sands in Alberta, Canada. People all over the world are resisting by defending their communities and environment against Shell. This is your chance to show solidarity with them and persuade the people of Bristol to boycott Shell.

Self-determination aided by citizens' referendum on any public issue

01-02-2011 17:35

Direct democracy is common ground for many radical movements. The citizen-led referendum is a tool of direct democracy which can be used to make and change policy of local and central government. Current campaigners against cuts, for health services and pro-environment could all use this tool, prevailing bank and finance policy could be challenged.
