A talk by Nicole Foss hosted by Transition MontpelierTransition Montpelier hosts talk by Nicole Foss (aka ‘Stoneleigh’ of the Automatic Earth blog), at 6.30 pm on Friday 26th November at Hamilton House in Stokes Croft.
Transition Montpelier is delighted to announce that Nicole Foss (aka ‘Stoneleigh’ of the Automatic Earth blog) will be talking in at Hamilton House in Bristol on Friday 26th November. All are welcome to join us.
What is going on economically? Really. Do you know? Are we in a recession, or just coming out of one? What’s all this ‘double-dip’ business? Why are the government making whopping cuts across society and telling us we can do it ourselves , while phone companies don’t have to pay £6BN in tax? Was the ‘bonfire of the quangos‘ a necessary cost-saving measure or something else? Are banks a ‘good‘ thing or responsible for the financial crisis? Is Ireland really at the point of economic meltdown? Where did all the money go? What is going to happen? How does Peak Oil fit into this? How will communities respond? How will we as individuals cope with all the change?
Will someone please help make some sense of this please? We’re baffled, and expect others are too.
We are delighted to announce that Nicole Foss will be talking in Bristol on Friday 26th November. This is a very rare opportunity to hear and question a great thinker on economics (particularly the financial crisis), its relation to Peak Oil and the very powerful effects we are likely to see in the near future.
Nicole spoke at this year’s Transition Network conference. It had an enormous effect on everyone there and the ripples are being felt wider and wider across Transition.
How can we make sense of the current financial crisis? What is going on? What can we do about it? What role can Transition and other community groups take to alleviate it?
Date: Friday 26th November
Time: Talk starts at 18:30, followed by discussions and local group networking and meet ups.
Venue: 5th floor, Hamilton House
Cost: free. Donations gratefully accepted; all on the night will go to Nicole and Hamilton House

On Cuts and Capitalism
15-11-2010 11:22
Over the past few weeks, the U.K. has seen the emergence of a large and militant movement against government cutbacks - strikes, occupations, and demonstrations have become commonplace. At the same time, the "anti-cuts" movements have been quite defensive in their outlook, as if 2007 were some sort of lost paradise which we need to return to.
Indymedia London caught up with David Graeber, an anarchist anthropologist at Goldsmiths College, to talk about capitalism, right-wing attacks on the "nice" parts of the state, and prospects for the democratic education movement.
In a lively and thought-provoking interview, he addresses the media's wildly overblown campaign against university lecturers for pointing out that there is no comparison between a few smashed windows and the smashed hopes of a generation of young people.
For bonus marks, check out Slavoj Zizek's public lecture at Birkbeck College in central London on Friday.
