Red in the Rainbow: The Fight for LGBT Liberation

17-08-2010 10:22

Public Meeting
7:30pm Wednesday 25th August
Easton Community Centre, Kilburn Street
Speaker Nick Gill
The election of a Tory government is a moment for all LGBT activists to take stock. The last 20 years have seen us arrive at something like formal legal equality – with similar advances in social attitudes towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people.
A recent poll found that 90 percent of British people were in favour of LGBT legal rights.
Yet LGBT oppression continues and abuse and assaults are commonplace. Sometimes there is worse – as we saw when bigoted teenagers beat Ian Baynham to death in Trafalgar Square last year.
Homophobic abuse is rife in many schools, and bigotry is all too common in the media, as Jan Moir’s disgusting article in the Daily Mail newspaper after the death of Stephen Gately showed.
The Tories’ track record means that nobody can be complacent about the future. David Cameron voted in 2003 to keep Section 28 – Margaret Thatcher’s law that forbade positive discussion of gay relationships in schools.
He has forged an EU alliance between the Tories and a rabidly homophobic Polish party.
Theresa May – now the minister responsible for equalities – also has a lousy track record. She voted against an equal age of consent in 1998, and in 2000 she voted against the repeal of Section 28.
In 2008 she voted against lesbian fertility rights, supporting a bill which argued that children need a male role model.
Cameron recognises that Tory bigotry is unpopular. During the election he distanced himself from shadow home secretary Chris Grayling, who said that B&B owners should be allowed to discriminate against gay couples.
The fight for liberation is far from over, come to the meeting to discuss how we win.

BBC - the ultimate prostitutes of propaganda.

17-08-2010 08:06

Audio Ken O'Keefe interviewed by Jane Corbin of BBC Panorama
If you haven’t seen it, look for BBC Panorama’s “Death in the Med” program online, you will be treated to first class propaganda as only the BBC can deliver. [1]

I am one of the passengers/witnesses interviewed for this program and I am very much aware of BBC’s role in justifying war and covering up Israeli crimes. I am in no way naive about this; to the contrary my motivation for the interview lay largely in the all too likely opportunity to expose the BBC. A relevant job considering the BBC’s role in the slaughter of over one million Iraqi’s, a direct role by virtue of the war they justified. BBC from start to present, justifying Iraq, a massive war crime and crime against humanity based entirely on lies (propagated intensely by the BBC). The British Broadcasting Corporation, synonymous with millions of orphans and refugees and countless lives destroyed in Iraq, beating the drums of war without pause, the ultimate prostitutes of propaganda.

Month of "carnage" at Swindon greyhound track

16-08-2010 21:22

Call for end to racing after four dogs die
An international greyhound protection group has called for an end to dog racing at Swindon, after learning that four greyhounds were fatally injured in races at the track last month.

An international greyhound protection group has called for an end to dog racing at Swindon Greyhound Stadium, after learning that four greyhounds were fatally injured in races at the Blunsdon track last month.

On July 7th, Rackethall Kenny, age two, fell after he was involved in a pile up with three other dogs on the second bend and, two days later, another two year old, Swift Abel, fell at the same bend and was carried from the track with a serious leg injury.

Then, on July 30th, a two year old female, called Wots Er Name, also fell at the second bend and, the following day, six year old Daytwo fell after a collision with two other greyhounds at the first bend.

All four dogs were so seriously injured that the track vet decided that they should be "put down".

Now campaign group Greyhound Action, which claims to have received the information from a sympathiser working at the stadium, is calling for the dog track to be closed.

The group's UK Co-ordinator, Tony Peters, said: "We were informed of this appalling carnage by an employee at the track, who has become increasingly disturbed about the suffering and slaughter of dogs caused by the greyhound racing industry.

"He also told us that there were concerns about a recent deterioration of the racing surface at the track, which may have contributed to these tragic incidents.

"Thousands of injuries to greyhounds, many of them serious, occur every year in Britain. The main reason for this is that the shape of the tracks, with fast straights leading into tight bends, creates a very dangerous environment for dogs to run in.

"In addition, hundreds of other greyhounds, bred because of the demand created by the Swindon track, are put to death as puppies or young dogs, before they even make it to the track, after being judged unsuitable for racing.

"According to recent research, more than 12,000 greyhounds, bred for the British racing industry, are 'put down' every year, after failing to make the grade as racers or when their 'careers' on the tracks come to an end.

"An RSPCA report on greyhound racing has stated that 'at least 20 greyhounds a day - either puppies which do not make the track, or retired dogs aged three or four - simply disappear, presumed killed'.

"Members of the public can help put an end to this horrific situation by not attending dog tracks or betting on greyhound racing, so this appalling industry fades away through lack of financial support."

Climate Camp Cymru, a camper's view

16-08-2010 18:46

I have just got back from South Wales, and got internet access for the first time in four days, to check any news about the Climate Camp Cymru, and I find there is next to none. I suspect the camp facilitators may be too embarrassed to say much because it was their poor organisation that helped the camp get evicted in short order.
