The Bristol World Naked Bike Ride is a protest against oil dependency and is also a promotion of Car Free Sundays in the city centre. It is also (not a little) symbolic of the vulnerability of cyclists and pedestrians in traffic, and a perty in the streets!
After a little tension caused when a police misunderstanding threatened to de-nude the ride (and arrest those not complying) just 3 days prior, a letter arrived stating that the ride could go on, nude as planned, as long as there weren't any serious complaints. And it did, with a turn out of about 200.

The Poor People's World Cup

13-06-2010 22:12

Poor people are excluded from the World Cup.
Fisherpeople who were normally allowed to fish from the piers in Durban, a struggle for which they fought very hard—it was one of the sort of key demands for certain people in the anti-apartheid struggle, is the freedom to be able to fish wherever you like— those rights have been rolled back for the duration of the World Cup.

New Eco Village / Centre for Alternative Technology

13-06-2010 16:23

Coming soon - join in.
Bristol’s carbon footprint is around 2.3 million tonnes CO2 per year or 6 tonnes per capita. The major sources are energy use in homes (37%), industrial and commercial energy use (35%) and road transport (18%).

AND RISING!

Survey shows 71% of Britons are concerned about climate, despite hacked emails, failure at Copenhagen and cold weather.

Climate science's winter of discontent has not made a large impact on the British public's attitudes to global warming, according to poll of over 1,800 people.

The poll, by researchers at the University of Cardiff, showed a small drop in public acceptance of climate change but not the major falls that some observers had predicted after a series of media controversies over the actions of climate scientists, combined with the failure of the Copenhagen summit and the record-breaking cold temperatures.

"By no means has there been a collapse in confidence in climate science," said Professor Nick Pidgeon, who led the study.

"If I was in policy circles I would not be complacent, but reassured that it has not been as serious as many thought it would be."

Bristol Eco Village crew have identified a new site on to which they plan to set up their next sustainable / alternative energy / Urban Centre for Alternative Technology. Its location will be announced soon.
