09-04-2009 10:59
British Tamils staged a civil disobedience protest on Monday night on Westminster Bridge. The protest was a spontaneous response, organised by text message, to the news that the Sri Lankan government had used chemical weapons on Tamil civilians at Bhuthukudiyrup in Mulaithivu, killing one and a half thousand people. The NGO War Without Witness has confirmed that mustard gas was used in the attack. Journalists, aid agencies, human rights monitoring groups and the United Nations are all barred by the Sri Lankan government from entering the conflict zone. The mainstream media did, for the first time, provide some coverage of the protest, but has not mentioned the reason for it. Many hundreds of Tamil families, having been moved forcibly from Westminster Bridge by the Metropolitan Police, are now camped out on Parliament Square in an illegal protest, which they are determined to continue until the British Government takes its supposed support for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to the United Nations Security Council.Brighton Anti-Militarism Conference 2nd-3rd May 2009

In a concerted action across the Internet, we call upon people to select a piece of information or other creative work which should be in the public domain, but which is chained by the rules of intellectual privateering rights (IPRs), and to re-appropriate it for the people of the world to share in common by publishing it as widely as possible on-line.Obama: Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile activity poses a real threat to its neighbors

Britain's policing problem
08-04-2009 22:12
Britain was once famous for its unarmed and relatively restrained police force, but the death of a man at last week's G20 protests in London has brought into focus serious concerns with a new aggressive form of policing. Former police chief Andy Hayman today warned [1] that "If left unchecked, we have a more violent crowd in uniform than the one demonstrating."Here I give my account of the protests and the police tactics used. This article was written several days prior to the release of the video [2] showing Ian Tomlinson, the man who died at the protests, being beaten and pushed by a baton-wielding policeman shortly before his death.
