Join the Big Blockade of Britain's nuclear bomb factory on October 27

09-10-2008 15:56

In 2006/7, Faslane 365 saw well over 1000 arrests during a year-long blockade of the Trident submarine base in Scotland. Last Easter, Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) Aldermaston saw its biggest demonstration in two decades as 5000 people surrounded the base to mark the 50th anniversary of the first London to Aldermaston march. Trident Ploughshares now invites you to a major blockade of the Berkshire nuke factory, where billions of pounds are currently being spent developing new warhead facilities that will scupper nuclear disarmament for another 50 years. Help us uphold international law by blockading this factory of death in what promises to be a colourful celebration of life and people power. There is a role for everyone, arrestable or non-arrestable, young or old. This event is supported by CND, Block the Builders and the Aldermaston Women's Peace Camp.

I Survived the Georgian War. Here's What I Saw.

09-10-2008 15:13

- In a speech before the United Nations last month, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili implored world leaders to set up an international investigation to find out the truth about the war in South Ossetia.

I couldn't agree more. But I think the results of an honest investigation would reveal a very different "truth" than what President Saakashvili claims.

I know this because I was in Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia, on Aug. 7 when Georgian troops marched into the city and killed my friends and neighbors. I huddled with my family in terror for three nights while Saakashvili's tanks and rockets destroyed hundreds of our homes, desecrated cemeteries, gutted schools and hospitals.

It is very important to support the cleaners at this crucial moment: UK racist immigration laws are being used to crush the cleaners' successful struggle. Three cleaners have been deported, and the employers are carrying out checks on many others: hundreds have received letters sayin their National Insurance number may not be correct.

Community Service - Extract from work in progress-

09-10-2008 05:19

This is what used to be known as community service, then community punishment and, the last I heard community payback, no doubt, a little further down the track, in keeping with current fads and silly thinking it will be called something else.

Illegal use of Equity - Average and Normal

09-10-2008 02:47

People have made bad and improper investments with credit and equity.

My family and friends (who I would say are "average" and "normal" Americans) have used home equity to buy other homes, invest in the stock market, to buy "stuff", and to pay expenses. This sometimes illegal and improper use of residential property equity is the problem! This equity does not exist yet, and no one knows when - or if it will. --- No one knows how much it may be. ----- And it is all ready "at work" - multiply times over. --?--- I have seen many people live off of credit, and use their money to invest. This "hyper-capitalism" of equity on equity - on credit and debt appreciation, is a flawed and failing economic model; and it is failing - just as it should.

Love him or loathe him, you've got to love this comment Gorgeous George made in the House of Commons after the Chancellor's statement today. This is an article about the global debt crisis, the financial bubble and the coming financial catastrophe which today's measures by the government have merely delayed for another day.

The real reasons behind the global "bailout" plan

08-10-2008 12:31

The bailout “solution” to delay the deepening of the crisis is not simply the wrong solution; it is the "solution" to accomplish the worst, as it is continuing the same path that has led to the current stage. It will inevitably drive the world-economy into its final collapse by further weakening of the production sphere and strengthening the speculative sphere.
The signs of the above can be read in the recent warnings of "a slow and painful recovery", despite the accepted bailout bill in the US. What this means is that although there will be a long and painful process, it will not lead to recovery in the end, because, in addition to paying the bill to non-productive hands, the productive sphere will be forced to produce the values of what they pay.
