South Africa: Community Activist killed by police at demonstraion against Water Privatisation

10-05-2008 22:35

This is a translation/repost of an article found on Imc Germany, which reports that the community activist, Jan Matshobe, has been arrested by police on Tuesday, 29th of April, during a demonstration against water privatisation in Sebokeng, a township ca. 60km south of Johannesburg.

First the police released the activist, but he got then rearrested in the evening. Thursday monring he was found dead in a field.

Patra Sindane, Coalition against Water Privatisation said, that as long as an investigation would not prove the contrary, the police is responsible for the death of the comrade. The police has no scruples in using live ammunition against the protests either. A death caused by the police in prison only means a further logical step of the same tactics used by the police already against the protests in Sebokeng.

Burmese Cyclone protest at Burma Embassy "Let Aid Experts In"

10-05-2008 02:25

"Let Aid Experts In"
Appalled yet hardly surprised at the junta's callous indifference to the deaths of up to 100,000 citizens and 1.5 million more destitute, the Burmese community protested passionately at their embassy on May 9th for aid experts and aid to be allowed into Burma. Whilst getting away as always with giving the international community the run-around, this time playing games over frustrating aid shipments - the brutal junta has been more preoccupied with rigging its military biased constitution referendum for May 10th.

Notts Stop the BNP objection to BNP licence application

06-05-2008 17:48

The BNP are planning on holding this year's Red White and Blue festival on land owned by party member Alan Warner in Denby, Derbyshire as they did last year. They have sought a premises licence from Amber Valley Borough Council for the sale of alcohol and the playing of music. The public consultation on this licence ended today.

Several concerned organisations, including Nottinghamshire Stop the BNP, lodged objections to this application, making a point of keeping to the limited terms imposed by licensing legislation. These objections, however, have been rejected, ostensibly because the organisations are not located within the affected area. Even where groups have been able to point to members living within the Amber Valley area, there objections have been rejected on the same basis. Notts Stop the BNP are currently investigating the possibility of appealing the council's decision. In the meantime, the objection they made is being placed in the public domain so that people can make their own judgements about the case it makes.

Regardless of the outcome of any appeals, the licence application will have to be considered by the council. Although the date of this meeting is currently unknown, the Stop the Red White and Blue campaign are already mobilising for a picket and encouraging those opposed to the BNP to join us.
