Trying to make sense of the G20 protests

02-04-2009 15:01

There have been ominous signs ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/feb/23/police-civil-unrest-recession) of it coming for some time but it seemed protesters were still unprepared for the level of police violence ( http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2009/04/426091.html) that was unleashed in London yesterday. The infamous kettling tactics of the British police have claimed their first life
( http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2009/04/426078.html) and there are numerous reports of head wounds, crushing and unprovoked attack. Today the convergence centre and Ramparts have been raided ( http://london.indymedia.org.uk/articles/1002) by riot cops and there are reports of further arrests. When we attack capital the defenders of capital will hit back, viciously.

02-04-2009 13:18

There are plans to build a high level virus containment facility and animal testing lab in Kings Cross alongside St Pancras Eurostar. The lab could be a level 3 lab which means that it could contain deadly pathogens such as anthrax and bird flu. The lab has been criticised at govt level, by MI5, MPS, councillors, residents, local businesses, charities and animal rights activists. We are holding a meeting next week at Housmans Bookshop, 5 Caledonian Road, Kings Cross, London N1.

Over 500 migrants are likely to have drowned crossing the mediterranean from Libya as two boats sank and a third is still missing . The true circumstances are unknown except to the migrants themselves .
The Libyan authorities put responsibility on strong winds rather than on the border regime they are implementing on behalf of Italy and European governments and paid for by the taxpayers of Italy and of the European Union.

02-04-2009 07:54

Yesterday evening, a protester died during demonstrations against the G20 outside the Bank of England in London. The circumstances are currently unclear, but he died inside a police cordon (or kettle) where police had crushed and baton charged protesters. The case has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. A solidarity demonstration will be held today, assembling at 1pm at the Bank. [Demo info]

Anyone with information they believe may help clarify the circumstances surrounding his death should, as soon as possible, write a full statement and contact the legal team at Bindmans Solicitors on 020 7833 4433 and the Legal Monitoring groups present at the demonstrations. Information can also be sent to Indymedia London: imc-london@indymedia.org (this is a private email address).
