Turkey, Ankara: discovery of "munitions-laden truck"

13-03-2010 09:52

Ankara: TSK vehicle carrying explosives
Questions persist after discovery of munitions-laden truck in Ankara ... Stopping a truck in Ümitköy on Wednesday, Ankara police discovered that the truck was filled with munitions. ... A munitions-filled truck discovered in Ankara late on Wednesday turned out to be carrying weapons and hand grenades belonging to the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) to a military facility in the Turkish capital, but questions still linger over why the armed forces ordered the transfer of explosives in a civilian vehicle and without any security escort for protection. Late on Wednesday, Ankara police stopped a truck in Ümitköy upon receipt of an e-mail from an unidentified individual. A search of the vehicle showed that it was filled with weapons and hand grenades. The driver told the police he was taking the munitions to the Special Forces Command in Gölbasi. He also showed documentation indicating that the truck had been hired by the TSK. According to the driver, the explosives were being taken to the military facility in a civilian vehicle for security reasons. A noncommissioned officer and a corporal in civilian attire were also in the truck.

indigenous activist Splitting the Sky

Splitting the Sky, indigenous activist, seized by security forces in Canada last year when he attempted to make a citizen's arrest of George W. Bush will have his day in court on Monday, March 8th. According to Professor Anthony J. Hall, this case will demonstrate whether Canada is ruled by law or fear and highlight the need for new principles, the Calgary Principles to amend the victor's justice of the Nuremberg Principles, in light of the new impunities for high level crimes against humanity and the Earth in this era, and the need to protect and honor civil resistance to those high crimes.

Mordechai Vanunu’s Nobel Stand

07-03-2010 21:41

The Sunday Times, 5 October 1986
For the first time in the history of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, a preemptive request to withdraw a nomination—by the nominee—was made.

It was revealed last week that in a letter to the Committee, Mordechai Vanunu had asked for his candidacy to be rescinded. It was unusual enough for Geir Lundestad to acknowledge that a nomination had even been received, let alone publicly disclose Vanunu’s request. But for Vanunu—a man who should have been awarded the Peace Prize long ago—it was in full keeping with the dignity, integrity and uncompromising nature of one to whom the world owes a great debt.

Good News in Decommissioners Preliminary Hearing

03-03-2010 22:55

Smash Edo
The prosecution led the days argument they claimed by causing over a quarter of a million pounds worth of damage to EDO/ITT we in no way could have saved lives in the occupied territories. This therefore meant we had no right to a jury trial. The judge then asked the prosecution to provide evidence to substantiate such a claim, the prosecution had nothing to show.

The defence then came back to say there were two linked issues that required consideration.
i) The circumstances in which a judge may withdraw a defendant’s defence;
ii) Whether the facts relied on by the defendants’ amounts to a defence in law.

The points of law up for scrutiny were from the:

Criminal Damage Act 1971,
Criminal Law Act 1967,
The Common Law Defence of Necessity.
