10th United Friends and Family Demo. In pictures.

27-10-2008 18:11

2008 marks the tenth year that the bereaved relatives of those who have died at the hands of the state have taken to the streets. This year the Police kept a low profile and mostly a respectful distance from the families. The optimist could say that they have learned their lesson and decided to do things differently after their actions on the 2007 parade see:

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/11/384896.html

Meanwhile the cynic might suggest that they knew damn well that there would be a lot more media interest this year. Due to the de Menezes enquirey, and the presence of Jean Charles' family on the demo. And were therefore told to be on their best behaviour? There was certainly three times more journalists present than last time. Take your pick.

Below are some pictures of the day:

Report on 10th Annual United Families & Friends Remembrance procession

26-10-2008 11:49

On Saturday 25th October 2008, the tenth annual United Families and
Friends Remembrance procession took place, with several hundred people in
attendance, including many family members of those who have died in
suspicious circumstances in police custody, prison and 'secure' mental
health facilities.

The march made its way in silence down Whitehall to Downing Street where,
after the bouquets had been subjected to a police examination, family
members were allowed to come forward and fix them to the gates in front of
Downing St, where police had agreed they would be allowed to stay until
the end of the protest.

Deaths in Custody: A Call for Solidarity for tomorrow 25.10.

24-10-2008 14:09

Every last Saturday in October, the friends and families of the victims gather for a protest march to Downing St 10. In addition, there's a press conference announced beforehand. Deaths in custody are still rampant, both by police and in prisons, and the new Counter Terrorism Bill won't change that for the better. As the ongoing Menezes inquiry shows, the persons responsible for the killings still go off scot free.

Stop the War Activist Graffiti on Recruitment Office: Appeal to Nottingham Crown Court

24-10-2008 13:51

On Thursday 23rd October, I attended the Nottingham Crown Court to hear the appeal against conviction of Henry Twigger.

On the 6th April 2008, Henry had initially painted graffiti on the Army Careers Office at the Victoria Centre, in Milton Street, Nottingham. He did so while wearing a hi-vis vest and was unmasked. His choice of slogans included "War 4 Oil" & "Terrorists join here" on the front of the building in red paint.
