Big Brother targets the school run

Keith Parkins | 31.10.2008 16:33 | Ecology | Repression

Parents dropping off their kids outside schools are to be tagetted by the Stasi car parking police.

'This is not Big Brother gathering your details and sharing information. People should not be fearful of that. It is just another technique we are using to achieve a safer borough and achieving a parking management objective.' -- Mike Bamber, Rotten Borough of Rushmoor

All 46 infant, junior, primary and secondary schools in Aldershot and Farnborough are to be put under secret CCTV coverage so that chief Stasi and local council bully-boy Mike Bamber can spot delinquent parents dropping off their offspring at the school gate and issue them with an on-the-spot fine.

This has nothing to do with road safety, it is about issuing fines, and parents dropping off their kids provides an easy target.

It goes without saying there has been no consultation with either the kids, the parents, the teachers or the schools. The head teachers though have been ordered to issue letters to parents.

Nor has this anything to do with road safety. It is about issuing fines, and parents dropping off their kids is an easy target.

No would dispute that parents dropping off their kids at school is a problem, and accidents do happen. But you resolve this by consultation, by encouraging parents to walk their kids to school.

If Bamber was concerned about the safety of kids, he would be targeting the imbeciles who park on the pavements, forcing mums with buggies and toddlers at their sides out into the road and into the path of oncoming speeding traffic.

If Bamber was concerned about the safety of kids, he would be introducing a 20 mph speed limit in the vicinity of all schools in the borough.

Bamber has had drawn to his attention the problem of Park Road in North Camp, where vans and cars are parked on the pavement, a situation made worse on bin day. He has done nothing.

A few weeks ago a disabled woman unable to park in a disabled bay, ended up paying out several hundred pounds when the council sent round bailiffs to collect an unpaid fine. The council could have used its discretion, but Bamber seems to delight in bullying the vulnerable.

A Farnborough town centre retailer was issued with a fine for parking on private property, his own service yard, over which the council has no jurisdiction.

Bamber tried to impose car parking charges on a small car park that serves two surgeries and a pharmacy. He was forced to back down by a local councillor. No consultation. The first the local councillor knew was when he saw a notice in the street. Neither were the surgeries or pharmacy consulted.

In North Camp Bamber has imposed unlawful street parking that is hitting local traders and causing nuisance to local residents with displacement parking. Again no consultation, the views of traders and residents ignored.

During the Farnborough Airshow Bamber wasted taxpayers' money sticking up parking signs that were not even legal!
