Hundreds dead as Sri Lankan army launches final assault

The Sri Lankan military has launched an offensive to capture the remaining small patch of land held by the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the country’s north. Aid agencies have warned of a humanitarian disaster as the fighting engulfs an estimated 100,000 civilians still trapped in the government-proclaimed “no-fire” zone.
The government has rejected appeals by the UN, major powers and international organisations for a halt to the fighting, and cynically described the offensive as the world’s “biggest rescue operation” to free civilians. In fact, what is taking place is a war crime that has already cost the lives of hundreds of civilians over the past two days alone.

For a while now, the British Security Service, commonly known as MI5, has been trying to recruit 'translators', particularly Arabic speakers, through translation agencies. I found the advert below in my mailbox this morning, coming from Top Language Jobs, with whom I am registered as a freelance translator. The ad explains that the job will involve not only "listening to and translating a variety of spoken communications", but also "adding your own insight on the political and cultural context".

28-year-old Parameswarn Subramaniyan from Mitcham is not in good health as day 13 of his hunger strike comes to a close. He started off without any water and this seems to have done its damage although he does consume water now.
Lots of other youth are joining him tomorrow in mass hunger strikes.

The demands are as follows

The demands put forward by Parameswaran follow:

* Immediate and permanent ceasefire

* Food and medical aid should be allowed to reach the civilians immediately with international monitoring committees and allow “Mercy Mission to Vanni”

* UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, arrange to meet our representatives.

* Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam are our sole representatives and UK government should lift the ban on LTTE.

* UN should call for an immediate referendum to the Tamils regarding whether they want separate nation or to remain as Sri Lanka.
