Ali Shalal, known to the World as the "man behind the hood", is a man of tremendous courage and determination. I heard his testimony, I had the opportunity of speaking to him on several occasions in the course of the war crimes Conference. We established bonds of friendship and solidarity. We shared our determination to bring the war criminals in high office to justice.
Ali Shalal is a professor of theology. He is a tremendous source of inspiration. It is important to understand that what Ali Shalal experienced is part of a routine process of torture, applied systematically to those arrested. Many of his companions in Abu Ghraib died as a result of torture or were executed upon their release so that they would not reveal the gruesome horrors and atrocities committed on the orders of the Bush administration. Also of significance, as confirmed by his testimony, was the fact that Israeli "civilians" were involved in assisting the US prison interrogators.
Ali Shalal survived and provided testimony in the name of all those who were tortured to death. Ali Salal's words will go down in history.
The war criminals in high office will be brought to justice. It is also our determination that they will be given a fair trial.

19-02-2007 20:41With the illegal “war on terror,” renewal of the USA PARTIOT Act, the Real ID Act of 2005, and the implementation of the National Animal ID Act, is the Bush administration taking the Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of unwitting United States citizens? In this summary of the documentary “One Nation Under Siege,” we can see the pattern of our freedoms falling by the wayside, one at a time.
On the 16th February 2007 former Uzbekistan ambassdor with a conscience, Craig Murray, was elected to the position of Lord Rector at the University of Dundee. Craig Murray promised his best to kick out Special Branch from the campus and from spying on the Islamic Society and also pledges to defeat severe cuts in the departments of town and regional planning, modern languages and community education, which also could see the Botanic Gardens sold off.

19-02-2007 12:40Despite the pretence of independence, the treatment of certain news items by the "independent" is, if anything, more reactionary compared to other papers. The TV review (19 feb 07) of the 911 programme is a good example of this. Too often people that write for this website assume bad intentions, rather than the usual influences, so, as a sort of "informed sceptic", allow some explanations: engage!
19-02-2007 11:05The US government has stepped up its rhetoric against Iran this week with a presentation held in Baghdad designed to support the claim that, as worded by President Bush last month, "Iran is providing material support for attacks on American troops." US officials said that weapons were being smuggled into Iraq by an elite unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard known as the Quds Force on orders "coming from the highest levels of the Iranian government." But, as the Washington Post observed, "The officials offered no evidence to substantiate allegations that the 'highest levels' of the Iranian government had sanctioned support for attacks against U.S. troops." That conclusion was admittedly an "inference", and the defense analyst present acknowledged the inconclusiveness of the evidence, saying, "The smoking gun of an Iranian standing over an American with a gun, it's never going to happen."
19-02-2007 11:00Raw Story's inimitable Larisa Alexandrovna has recently written an excellent article detailing the neoconservatives' six-year long project to use American power to attack and produce regime change in Iran. Appended to the piece is a timeline including key Bush administration statements about Iran, "news" stories and neocon writings abetting efforts to vilify Iran, and the antics of such characters as former Congressman Curt Weldon, Iran-Contra arms dealer Manucher Ghorbanifar, and spy-for-Israel Larry Franklin who have worked to facilitate that attack. I've used it as the basis for this more elaborate (although surely incomplete and imperfect) chronology.
19-02-2007 10:06The US policy of “extraordinary renditions”—the illegal kidnap and transportation of supposed terror suspects to secret detention sites where they are then tortured—was the subject of both an Italian legal investigation and a critical report by the European Parliament last week.

see Turkey on Israel's side. As the full extent of the alliance
against Iran becomes concrete, the true nature of military agreements
between the two countries will eventually become clear.

18-02-2007 18:05The US and Britain, which allege to be pioneers in the campaign against terrorism, are themselves actually defending the terrorists, training them and providing them with the needed media and financial supports and facilities." (Soltan-Ali Mir, Iranian Interior Ministry)
