University lecturer branded `racist' for weblink

27-08-2003 13:01

The two leading Jewish newspapers in the UK last weekend kicked off a potential firestorm over the views held by university academics.

Dr Nat Queen, lecturer in mathematics and statistics at the University of Birmingham, has been lambasted for a link on his homepage to a website which accuses the US government of being satanic, criticises Israeli policy and questions what involvement Israel may have had in the September 11th attacks in the US.

Burundi's forgotten victims - online petition for an end to impunity

22-08-2003 06:56

My sister Charlotte was one of more than 300,000 civilians killed in Burundi's vicious civil war. Her death was exceptional only for the fact that it was noticed by the international media (ie.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/1093135.stm). By and large, the world ignores Burundi. By and large, Burundi's elite is content to allow the killers to kill with impunity. My family is campaigning for justice for all of Burundi's forgotten victims.  http://www.petitiononline.com/Burundi/

Efforts are being made to prevent a leading member of the far-right Belgian party Vlaams Blok visiting the Scottish parliament.

Video - Close Campsfield

14-08-2003 12:18

Video
Campsfield House is an Immigration Detention Centre at Kidlington, six miles from Oxford. It is a prison run for private profit by Group 4, supervised by Home Office immigration officials. It used to be a youth detention centre, but it re-opened as an Immigration Detention Centre in November 1993. The local parish council was opposed to it, but their wishes were overruled by the Home Office.

There are 200 detainees in Campsfield House. Most are political refugees fleeing danger, torture and even death from countries such as Nigeria, Algeria, Ghana, Turkey, India and Zaire. They are held without charge, without time limit, without proper reasons given, and without proper access to legal representation. Amnesty International report that these are breaches of internationally recognised human rights. The former Chief Inspector of HM Inspectorate of Prisons (Judge Stephen Tumim) and The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture have condemned conditions at Campsfield House.
