Wal Mart up to it's anti-union tricks again?

24-06-2006 16:03

An article has appeared in the Sunderland Echo  http://www.sunderlandtoday.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=1107&ArticleID=1585149 where workers were being photographed entering the Washington depot. The article suggests that it was the GMB doing this, which they deny... as we know the surveillence and intimidation of workers when the Union is about is classic WalMart.

Matilda in Court: some feedback from the case

23-06-2006 23:24

On Thursday 22nd June Yorkshire Forward took 30 persons unknown who had established a social centre in 111 Matilda Street to the County Court for Trespass. In hearing the case you actually dared to hope at one point that there might be some kind of outcome in Matilda's favour. But as ever the judge sided with the property owners regardless of the arguments put forward and legal technicalities raised. I wasn't able to get notes down of all the arguments made, but hopefully the bits I can recall will give you a small flavour of the case.

Close Down Sandford House Reporting Centre!

23-06-2006 15:25

Audio
The following audio file is an interview with a Zimbabwean woman (who unsurprisingly wishes to remain anonymous) who tells us about her experiences of being detained whilst signing at Sandford House Home Office Reporting Centre in Solihull and taken to Yarlswood detention centre.

There is a regular monthly protest on the last friday of the month at Solihull's Home Office Reporting Centre from 12pm - 2pm, called by Birmingham Noborders and Birmingham's Anti-Racist Campaign - details of the protest are below.

The music in the report is by Vince and the percussion by John. You can hear this song along with others including film, poetry, discussion and live bands at the Birmingham Noborders benefit on the evening of the monthly demo at Sandford House - Friday 30th June, 8pm - 2am at the Spotted Dog in Digbeth Birmingham.

In the interview she describes how she was snatched and abused by yellow jacketed 'escorts' whilst signing at Sandford House and subsequently taken to the immigration prison that is Yarlswood detention centre.

She tells of her experiences in Yarlswood and the unimaginable state of limbo thousands of Refugees experience whilst awaiting a decision from the Home Office. She also tells of the horror of a young woman who was forcibly deported whilst naked from Yarlswood and who was filmed by the detention centre staff. The Home Office later denied they had abused and filmed the detainee.

Please come and show your anger and disgust at the Border Regime on Friday 30th June at Solihull's Home Office Reporting Centre.

Report From Palestine: "Ethnic Cleansing in Slow-Motion"

22-06-2006 17:34

On the 24th of May the Israeli army invaded the West Bank city of Ramallah, my current home. In the middle of the day, undercover Israeli forces performed an “arrest operation” on a Palestinian militant in the centre of Ramallah. When their cover was blown, a large force of Israeli soldiers were sent in so that they could shoot their way out of the city past the angry crowds of Palestinians that had assembled. The Palestinian fighters were, for the most part, nowhere to be seen during the invasion. It was left to crowds of youths to defend the city from this act of aggression, using whatever came to hand. Stones, tins of paint, scrap metal - all of it was thrown at the soldier’s jeeps from the rooftops of Ramallah. In the course of events, the Israeli army martyred three civilians and one Policeman (who was apparently unarmed at the time) and injured about thirty others, shooting rubber-coated and live ammunition at the crowds of civilians. In this act of war, Israel violated the entirely one-way ceasefire that Hamas and all the other armed Palestinian factions (apart from Islamic Jihad) had been sticking to since February 2005, despite regular Israeli military operations and killings in the Palestinian territories.

Thresher's Nottingham boycott over attack, racism

22-06-2006 14:38

stickers
Local activists are stepping up a campaign against a local store with authoritarian policies, after the store manager launched a physical attack on a local activist. Threshers, of 167 Derby Road, Nottingham, is facing a consumer boycott after an individual appearing to be the store owner or manager brutally attacked an activist in the street. The store has been the focus of a campaign against no headwear policies which attack lifestyle choice and persecute religious minorities.
