Noise protest outside Cedars detention centre
09-09-2011 16:55
This afternoon activists from NoBorders and No One is Illegal held a noise demonstration outside Cedars, a detention centre for nine families and their children in Pease Pottage, Sussex, which opened last week.
The activists gathered outside the front gates (metal fencing with a perspex cover) with a banner denouncing Barnardo's involvement in the detention industry (the charity is running "social and welfare services" at the detention centre). They chanted through a loudspeaker and made noise with various instruments. They also walked part of the way round the perimeter fence, continuing to remonstrate loudly against detention and deportation.
There were guards in hi-vis vests in the grounds of the centre, and a UKBA guard was also spotted. There was no sign of any of the detainees.
As the activists left the centre they were stopped by police under the pretext of "anti-social behaviour".
The activists stated that protests will continue until Cedars closes.

Spartaci, Spartacum, Spartacuses?
07-09-2011 15:14
I have put myself back on trial to support the F&M defendants because I believe the CPS has no more reason to prosecute them than they do to prosecute me. It is in no-ones interest to penalise peaceful protest. It is in everyones’ interest to support people who stand up against injustice.

In June, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges against 109 of the Fortnum 145, after doing the same with the few younger protesters some time before that. Their reason for continuing with the remaining 30 has been cited as the possession of ‘leaflets and signs‘.

28-08-2011 11:55
In the aftermath of the riots that swept the UK earlier this month, local courts and authorities have been swift to crackdown. Notts Police have charged 75 people with offences relating to the disorder, including 18-year old Amed Pelle who was sent to prison for 2 years and 9 months for comments made on Facebook. Nottingham City Council have also jumped at the opportunity to look tough and Leader Jon Collins has said he ‘will seek to evict anyone who is directly involved, or whose sons or daughters have been involved in disturbances.’ In response a group has formed to resist any evictions.
On the newswire: 2 yrs 9 mths for chatting shit on Facebook | Stop Jon Collins’ vindictive evictions
Previous feature: Riots spread to Nottingham
With the Tories calling for exceptionally tough sentencing for those involved in the disturbances, a number of high profile cases have made headlines including a mother jailed for 5 months for handling stolen shorts (who was later freed on appeal), a man jailed for 6 months for stealing a bottle of water and a man jailed for 16 months for taking a lick of an ice cream.
There have also been sentences of several years for posting material on the internet that supposedly incited rioting. Two men from the North West were sentenced to 4 years in prison for ’inciting riots’ on 16th August. Jordan Blackshaw organised an event that only himself and the police turned up to, whereas Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan made a joke page called the Warrington Riots whilst drunk and then removed it the next morning. In Nottingham, 18-year old Amed Pelle was sentenced to 2 years 9 months in jail after making a number of pro-riot comments on his Facebook page.
Soon after the riots began the Government considered banning people from accessing social networking sites in order to quell the riots and met with the heads of Facebook, Twitter and Research in Motion (the company behind the Blackberry Messenger service) to ‘discuss their responsibilities in this area’. David Cameron asked the police whether they needed new powers to shut off social networking sites. Although the Government has since backtracked it is worth noting that the move received praise from the Chinese state. It is also worth noting that only months before, during the Arab Spring, the UK was commending the social networking of rioters who overthrew governments in Tunisia and Egypt.
Various central government and local authorities have also called for other punishments for those linked to rioting and their families, including stripping them of welfare benefits and evicting them from their council houses. Proceedings have already begun in the London Boroughs of Wandsworth and Southwark to evict tenants who have been charged along with their families. Campaigners against the evictions call the moves double punishment and collective punishment and have demonstrated outside the home of Ravi Govindia, the leader of Wandsworth Council. Nottingham City Council is also threatening to evict tenants from Nottingham City Homes properties. NCCLOLs has examined the tenancy agreement and recommends that those who might be affected seek legal advice soon.

The squatted social centre known as "Plebs' college" was in court this morning for an eviction hearing.Dale Farm under Siege
25-08-2011 01:55
Notices have gone up along Oak Road, adjacent to Dale Farm, saying that the road will be closed to all but residents from Friday, Sept. 2nd. Both ends of Oak Road will be blocked (blocking access via both Hardings Elm Road and Gardiners Lane North). Additionally, the lay by on the southern end of Oak Lane (leading on to the A127; by the white ‘Basildon onion’ water tower) will be blocked.
As the launch of Camp Constant ( http://dalefarm.wordpress.com/activity/ ) on August 27th approaches, the authorities appear poised to blockade Dale Farm.
ROAD BLOCK WARNING
Notices have gone up along Oak Road, adjacent to Dale Farm, saying that the road will be closed to all but residents from Friday, Sept. 2nd. (See http://dalefarm.wordpress.com/contact for details). Both ends of Oak Road will be blocked (blocking access via both Hardings Elm Road and Gardiners Lane North). Additionally, the lay by on the southern end of Oak Lane (leading on to the A127; by the white ‘Basildon onion’ water tower) will be blocked. There will be a no stop zone on the footpaths on the A127 between A176 at Billericay and A132 at Wickford. Residents are feeling under siege, with children asking how many more nights they are going to be able to sleep in their beds. Dale Farm is a big site, so it should be possible to find routes in, but be advised that after Sept. 1, it will be harder to get in, and likely impossible to get vehicles in.
WATER AND ELECTRICITY TO BE CUT
The Council have released information that they intend to cut water and electricity supplies from Dale Farm after the eviction notice period expires on midnight 31st August. This will leave sick, elderly, young, and pregnant residents without access to water or electricity. Amnesty International ( http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/asset/EUR45/013/2011/en/0faf8cdd-f5a1-4024-af41-5a26f21d51a5/eur450132011en.html ) have condemned the removal of vital water and electricity in these circumstances, and asked their supporters to put pressure on the council to cease this action which represents a serious violation of human rights. An injunction has been sought in consideration of two residents who are dependent upon a constant electricity supply for nebulisers, without access to which their lives are placed in serious jeopardy. See Amnesty’s Kartick Raj speaking to BBC Essex this week ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-14635807 )

DESPERATE PLEA TO UN
*Richard Sheridan as president of the Gypsy Council has been involved in eleventh-hour negotiations with the UN Commission on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in Geneva; the Special Raporteur has already entreated the UK Government to cease the evictions and to ensure the families at Dale Farm are offered viable culturally appropriate alternative sites. These realities have met dramatically in the crack-down and deportations of Roma people from France and Italy. Come to the Workshop organised by No One Is Illegal and London No Borders including speaker who is an activist in Amnesty International's campaign against the persecution of Roma in Europe.

RISE UP!
We cannot stand by and do nothing while the UKs largest Travellers site, home to hundreds of families, including many children, elderly and sick residents, is brutally evicted. Travellers should not have to live in constant fear of eviction with their lives and communities under constant threat. They should not have to be forced out of their homes and off their land by bulldozers and police. This constant hounding, marginalisation, and lack of provision is how rural England does ethnic
cleansing. It is time for a resurgence of support for Gypsy and Traveller communities. Time to stand against the extreme racial discrimination faced by Gypsies and Travellers. Time to defend the right of Gypsies and Travellers to land, life, respect, and dignity.
