Women representatives of Six Nations Territory Canada give Nottingham Sumac Talk

Women representatives from the Six Nations on the Grand River community in Ontario, Canada gave a talk at the Sumac Centre, Forest Fields, Nottingham on Wednesday the 27th of June at 7.30 pm.

They spoke about the experience of reclaiming and defending a piece of land from development. Their action has been incredibly successful, having prevented the development and protected the land from an armed police incursion.

Since Saturday the protest camp in Parliament Square has been a scene of almost boring calm. Even the police were behaving in an unusually affable manner but all that changed today, almost as if in a final finger-up gesture from the departing Tony Blair.

Prisoners revolt in Rye Hill, Warwickshire

A group of prisoners at a privately run jail near Rugby 'went wild' on Monday, June 25th. The inmates took control of one wing at the Rye Hill prison, which is run by GSL, for almost two hours in the afternoon. A team of specially trained and equipped staff were then brought in and regained control of the wing. A spokesman for GSL said that, despite some damage at the prison, there were "no injuries to either staff or inmates".

On the 9th of June 2007 Osamuyia Aikpitanhi, a 23 year Nigerian, was killed by spanish police officers during a forced deportation. A Protest Note will be delivered to Spanish embassies around the globe at NOON on FRIDAY 29th of June 2007.

today, brian haw won a major victory in court when district judge workman issued summonses against leading police figures. last year, police raided parliament square on 23rd may and removed 90% of brian's display. in january this year, judge purdey ruled that brian haw had no case to answer as the conditions he supposedly broke were not lawful. this meant the raid itself was unlawful.

Liverpool Council Plans Dual Carriageway On Festival Site

As you have probably heard by now the council are planning to build a 4-6 lane dual carriageway along Riverside Drive and Jericho Lane, joining to Sefton Street. There were hints about this in the Planning Officer's Report re. the garden festival site, which we picked up on but we didn't realise it would be so soon - they will have barely created the Japanese Garden before they have to tear it down or move it over.

Following extensive local and national resistance, BASF (the company trialing the GM potatoes), announced last month that they would not be conducting a GM potato trial in Yorkshire this year!
Just to let you know that on Sunday 1st July subsidised transport will be going to Cambridge from Manchestser for the GM-Free Potato Picnic, a protest against GM potato trials in Girton village. For information on the minibus call 07982 033522.

Plenty of rain but still no hassle from the police. The Peace Camp now has 10 tents plus one Gazebo. The latter is very good for socialising out of the rain.
