Tree-sitters in Bonn Square (Oxford) opposing the massive expansion of the nearby Westgate shopping center. Since last Thursday one of the large trees in Bonn Square has been occupied in an attempt to save it from the chainsaws. It is one of around 40 trees, including many large mature ones, in the Westgate area marked for destruction.

Guantánamo Britons resist Spanish extradition order

It has been reported that on the 6th January 2008, 129 rabbits were liberated from a lab breeder in Lincolnshire. This breeder supply HLS, as well as several UK universities. The photo's show the cramped, unclean conditions of this hell hole - would we expect anything else?

Anti-deportation campaigner in court after XL Airways protest

An anti-deportation campaigner will appear in Court in Horsham tomorrow (Thursday, January 10th) following a peaceful protest at XL Airways offices in Crawley, near Gatwick Airport, last August. D. Thompson, who lives in Bradford, is charged with aggravated trespass, having locked himself onto the banisters in the reception of XL headquarters.

cross-party petition to downing st this morning

a petition was delivered this morning to 10 downing street by an assortment of cross-party mps, a peer, a turner prize artist, a comedian, and several other activists. in the run-up to the end of the government's 'consultation' on 'managing protest near parliament', the petition calls for a repeal of the 'socpa' law that has criminalised so many peaceful protests, and a call for no further police powers over protest.

My Special Branch friends

Like the many times I have travelled through a UK airport over the last two years (see the first and second times), yesterday too I had a Special Branch officer picking me from the passengers crowd at Birmingham Airport to ask me some 'very important' questions; important to the 'security' of this country and all the 'free' countries in the world. Sometimes I pass through quietly; at others with a few routine questions. But occasionally, especially when it's a new airport or a new officer in charge, I get stopped and questioned for up to an hour.. only to practice in how many different ways I can say "No comment"!

Chicken saved seconds from slaughter at Sun Valley (during high security alert)
