Kenny Peter's Inquest Points to Asylum Failures

On 15 September, an inquest found that yet another asylum seeker had taken his life in detention. Unusually, in such cases, in addition to a self-harm verdict, the jury also listed the numerous ways in which the system, supposed to care for vulnerable detainees, had failed to do so.

Benmira Family belong to Leeds

At 6.00am on the morning of Thursday the 20th September, immigration and police officers 'snatched' the family from their Leeds home and took them to Tinsley House IRC, where they spent five days before being transferred to Yarl's Wood IRC. Removal directions have been set for Sunday the 8th October.

Protest at US consulate in Edinburgh

On the 4th of October a protest organised by Rising Tide Scotland involving around 30 people took place outside the US consulate in Edinburgh. We were there to protest against the war and environmental destruction perpetrated by Washington. Our action was in response to the call by Rising Tide North America for an international day of climate action which coincided with the end of the G8 climate talks in Mexico city.

Glasgow - Asylum Seeker Action Prevents Removal

Swift action and a balcony protest prevented the Home Office from detaining a family in Cardonald this morning. After a 5 hour balcony protest, Cem Coban was taken from the flat by Police officers. The families outside blocked the van from leaving.

Court challenge to legality of taxes and fines - Friday

On Friday 6th October at 10am, anti-war campaigner Chris Coverdale appears at Marylebone Magistrates Court to defend his decision not to pay a fine arising from his conviction for using a megaphone and demonstrating in parliament square earlier this year. He will argue that to do so would aid genocide, and so he has a duty not to which he will prove in court by putting the Iraq war on trial. Supporters and the press are warmly welcomed.
