Whose War on Whose Terror? Reclaiming Our Rights

Yesterday, I was fortunate to have been one of the opening plenary speakers at the 'Reclaiming Our Rights' conference at the Human Rights and Social Justice Institute at the London Metropolitan University, organized mainly by the Campaign Against Criminalising Communities (CAMPACC). It was an excellent conference bringing together some of the leading dissident organizations involved in political activism against the anti-terror laws. Speakers included people like Craig Murray, former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan; Mark Thomas, political comedian and journalist; Gareth Pierce, leading human rights lawyer; Brian Haw, the permanent Parliament Square protestor; among many others.

Nobel Peace Laureate Arrested at Faslane, Scotland

Five people, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Mark Chapman, Philip Mangold, Ann Patterson and Miriam Turley were arrested by Strathclyde police outside the UK trident nuclear submarine base at Faslane , Scotland on Saturday 9 December at 12 noon. Mairead Maguire is a Nobel Peace Laureate and honorary President of the Peace People . The five were part of a larger group called that had come from Ireland as part of the Faslane 365 campaign to protest against nuclear weapons of mass destruction at the Base. The blockade lasted about 40 minutes while the traffic was slowed down to a single lane. The other members of the group sang songs and shouted words of encouragement while the five were being arrested.

Voices of Torture in London

Last night at the regular rampART social centre cinema night a disapointingly small audience was treated to a series of film being presented under the theme 'alternative black history month'.

Along with the films was a illuminating discussion about deportation, torture and the awful human rights abuse in Eritrea. Coincidently we also learned of a demonstration called for today outside the Eritrean embassy to commemorate The International Human Rights Day.
