26-08-2006 09:32

ghost bike
A small but determined group gathered in Gothenburg on Friday evening to remember the victims of climate change. Not only was this the last Friday in the month, it was also the day one year ago when the storm Katrina that devastated New Orleans reached hurricane force. Gothenburg was one of 28 Critical Masses around the world where this was remembered.

Anti-Deportation Picket in Solihull

26-08-2006 06:09

Like on every last Friday of the past few months, a picket was held yesterday at the immigration reporting centre in Solihull. The 'theme' for this month was "stop racist deportations!" Many of the 'usual faces' could not make it down (was it due to the Climate Change Camp, the newly occupied Cottage Social Centre or, perhaps, summer holidays?), so the turn-up was less than in previous month and the demo less lively. But the 'pitch' still looked crowded as bigger-than-normal numbers of asylum seekers had to sign on on that day due to the Bank Holiday on Monday.

The enviromental cost of Israel's lunacy. August 24th. Photo report

24-08-2006 18:13

.
This beach would usually be packed at this time of year. Every lifeguard station would be operational and the sand would be obscured by tens of thousands of sunbathers and local families. This was the hub of Beirut’s growing tourist industry. Now the bars along the sea front are as deserted as the beach itself. It is closed to the public for reasons of safety. Only press and volunteer clear-up teams are allowed in. Last night CNN ran a highly biased documentary about the effect of the war on Israel’s tourist industry. What about Lebanon? Tourism was the fastest growing part of this little country’s economy. Unlike Israel there is no American money to plug the gap left in people’s livelihoods. The damage to the income of the coastal towns and cities is high; the environmental damage is nothing short of a catastrophe

Mersey Waste Holdings faced determined opposition this morning when the first lorry carrying waste arrived at Hafod Quarry, Johnstown, near Wrexham. Anxious to get the lorry into the site with the minimum of delay, the Police used heavy-handed tactics to drag protesters out of the way with scant regard for health and safety. Welsh media were in attendance but didn't manage to film the blockaders being dragged away.

Evidence that Israel has in fact struck military targets - Wed 23rd Aug

24-08-2006 11:33

.
After three weeks of searching Beirut and South Lebanon for evidence that Israel were striking military targets I have finally found it! I was beginning to give up hope. Twenty long days of visiting bombed schools, hospitals, factories and residential areas. Not a scrap of military metal to be found. I was beginning to think that Olmert was a liar. I was wondering if all that hanging out with Bush and Blair was beginning to rub off on him? Now I am standing on a hill high above the village of Khiam in south Lebanon, and all around me lie the debris of destroyed Tanks, Jeeps, Artillery weapons and APCs. The airstrike that took this place out was certainly efficient. Just one problem. All this hardware is… erm… Israeli.

Israel’s ‘special’ forces in spectacular cock up - Sun 20th Aug

24-08-2006 11:29

On Friday morning it was announced that Israel had bombed a rural area in the Bekka province. This was a blatant violation of the ceasefire, which had been in place for just 4 days. When asked for an explanation by the UN, the Israelis retorted that they could not discuss the operation for reasons of security. Replace the word ‘security’ with ‘embarrassment’ and the statement makes a lot more sense.

Ali el-Nahri Remember Their Dead - Sat 19th Aug - Photo Report

24-08-2006 11:27

.
Over 1000 people are packed into the Mosque at Ali el-Nahri, to remember 5 of the town’s Martyrs who died in the recent war. All were civilians. They had been hastily buried during the hostilities, in some cases before their relatives had even been informed. Today is a chance for them to be remembered. The security seems tighter than usual – my credentials are checked several times. The reason why becomes apparent when the main speaker arrives. Dr Hussain Al Hajj Hassan is a senior figure in Hizbollah and someone who the Israelis have vowed to assassinate. He is a powerful and charismatic speaker. Most of his address is given over to paying tribute to the towns Martyrs. However he is not lost for words on subjects like Israel, Olmert and Bush.

First Court Hearing for The Cottage of Content's Occupiers

23-08-2006 11:43

Leaflet
Press Release: First Court Hearing for The Cottage of Content's Occupiers
23 July, 2006

The Cottage of Content, a community and youth centre in Sparkbrook closed by Birmingham City Council last year, was occupied on 9 July, 2006, by a group of activists, who, along with local people, aim to put the building back into community use.

Since the start of the occupation, the collective who organised the take-over have been issued with various letters from Birmingham City Council demanding they vacate the premises. The latest letter received was a court summons, scheduled for Thursday, 24 August. Members of the Collective are planning to defend their actions and the occupation of the Cottage at the hearing, which is taking place at Birmingham Civil Justice Centre (33 Bull Street, Birmingham) at 11:20am.

The first public meeting of the Cottage Occupied Social Centre took place on 10th July, 2006, where the occupiers and members of the neighbourhood expressed their common desire for the place to be returned to public social use. A petition to "save our community centre from property developers" was drawn up and circulated in the neighbourhood. This was followed by a general public meeting on 21 August, where local residents expressed their anger at the loss of a valuable community resource without being consulted by the Council, and their desire to have it back. There will be another general meeting on 29 August, where representatives from the Council, local Councillors and the local MP will be invited to face the local people.

Whilst building up a campaign to compel the Council to re-instate this valuable community resource, the space is being used for a wide range of activities, from DIY and educational workshops, screenings and socials, a community library and Internet café, to a meeting place for various grassroots groups, including Birmingham Food Not Bombs, Birmingham NoBorders, Indymedia Birmingham, Women Fight Back, Birmingham Solidarity Federation and the West Midlands Anarchists. A local playgroup is also using the building to meet up regularly, and a local dominoes team is going to meet up there soon. Regular, open meetings are held every Monday at 7:30pm.
