The Euston Colonel Rapp demo. In Pictures.

31-01-2009 01:15

People opposing mass murder begin to assemble on Euston road.
On Thursday rumours started to circulate that Mr Geva Rapp, a very senior member of those peace loving Israeli Defence Forces (why do they have “defence” in their title when all they seem to do is attack?) was to address some sympathetic students in a very plush 'student' venue opposite Euston station.

You have to wonder exactly what what their plan was? There are literally dozens of venues all around London that are owned by sympathisers of ethnic cleansing in Palestine. So why (oh why??) did they they pick one that was about 100 yards from a venue where the swappies were having a Palestine rally and SOAS was just a few hundred yards away?!?

Whatever their 'plan' they certainly didn't discuss it with the local plods in advance....

Brook House detention centre under construction

The new immigration detention centre at Gatwick airport will not be opened until the spring, Corporate Watch has learned. The purpose-built high-security prison, named Brook House, is based on the 'successful' design of Colnbrook detention centre at Heathrow airport. The new detention centre will be run by Global Solution Ltd (GSL), which is now owned by G4S, and will hold up to 426 male and female detainees.

Corporate Watch: Direct Action Against Israel – Part 1

30-01-2009 00:32

On the second big Gaza solidarity march in London on 10th January, angry protesters smashed the front of a Starbucks store on Kensington High St, near the Israeli embassy, while other activists occupied the Ahava beauty shop in central London. Other actions in protest at the Israeli massacre in Gaza this month have included occupying the offices of the British Israel Communications and Research Centre (BICOM) in central London, 'decommissioning' the ITT/EDO arms factory in Brighton and university occupations across the country calling for divestment. So, who are these companies and why are they being targeted by protesters and campaigners? Corporate Watch takes a detailed look.

Metronet HQ occupied in London

29-01-2009 16:20

The RMT come to Metronet.
Metronet you may remember had to be bailed out by the government in 2007 when it very nearly went bust due. The obvious thing to do was to nationalise it. But back in those heady days Metronet was the flag bearer of Mr Brown's Public Private Partnership (PPP) scheme. So that would have seemed like admitting failure. So to this day Metronet is responsible for vast parts of the running of London Underground. Which also includes subcontracting the cleaning out to the less than humane ISS company. See:

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2008/08/407016.html

So on Wednesday the RMT returned to Metronet with plenty of mops and buckets in the hope that they might clean up their act by getting a contractor that does not pay people the minimum wage while grassing up its employees to the immigration services. ISS are also finding all kinds of dubious excuses for sacking anyone who joins a trade union. The demo itself was loud and lively but nowhere near as surreal and eventful as their last visit. See:

Mind you, it's not over yet!
