Remember Carlo Giuliani - Killed by Italian police at G8 Demo 2001

Carlo Giuliani was shot and killed by a carabinieri (Italian policeman) whilst he was taking part in an anti-globalisation demonstration in connection with the G8 summit held in Genoa in 2001.

His family complained to the European Court of Human Rights; relying on Article 2 (right to life) of the European Convention on Human Rights, that Carlo’s death was caused by excessive use of force and that the organisation of the operations to maintain and restore public order was inadequate.

Greece: Students' parents clash with the police outside the court

Athens Court, Monday: Parents clashed with the police outside building 7, were the the minor charges are facing trial. The conflict started after some parents tried to enter the building, and they were pushed away by the cops. The conflict spread around and the cops started hitting. The cops sprayed some parents on the face, one parent collapsed and another one was transferred to the hospital.
Photos posted in Indymedia show a cop hitting, by holding his baton the way round, which is strictly prohibited.

Kurdish Demonstrators Arrested at the Syrian Embassy in London

Some 100 Syrian Kurds from across the country held a protest today at the Syrian embassy in London to commemorate the so-called Qamishly uprising in 2004, where tens of Kurdish rioters were killed and thousands arrested by the Syrian police and army. The demo was restricted and 'penned in', but four angry protesters managed to break off and get to the embassy. All four, two of whom are said to be asylum seekers, were violently arrested and taken to Belgrave police station.

Today in the city of Berlin a solidarity demostration for the social center Ungdomshuset of Copenhagen took place. About 3000 activists joined the initiative promoted by the Berlin Ungdomhuset Solidarity Group, making a radical and determined demo that crossed the central streets of Berlin. Windows of banks were smashed, at least one police car destroyed.

The University of Nottingham's Amnesty International Society's held a protest against the continuing human rights abuses at Guantanamo Bay. It is now over five years since the first detainees were transferred to the detention camp and despite widespread international condemnation, hundreds of people from more than 30 nationalities remain there: without charge and with little hope of obtaining a fair trial.
