Tony Lola and his mother Mireille Maswa
Great news for all you lovely people - Pegah Emambakhsh is here to Stay
"We have just heard today that Pegah has finally been granted refugee status in the UK.  This is fantastic, wonderful, wonderful news and a great reward for all the hard work you all put in to ensure she was not sent back to Iran - so thank you, thank you, thank you.  Will be in touch again as soon as we have more details.  This  has been a long struggle but is a real vindication of what can be achieved when we all work together."

Love to all, Lesley, for Friends of Pegah Campaign

Leila, Soorena and Danoush put through the mangle
So it goes, when we last posted information the family had been taken to the airport on Thursday 6th February put on a plane taken off the plane and returned to Yarl's Wood.

On Monday night 9th February they were deported to Iran, on Tuesday 10th February they were brought back to the UK, released from immigration detention and are back in Halifax. No one at this stage is quite clear on what happened and why it happened the way it did. Once we have a factual summary of events, we will update everyone. Leila, Soorena and Danoush have had their world turned upside down and are deeply traumatized by the events. Seems pretty certain that we will be putting the family in touch with Bhatt Murphy solicitors, see next article.

Wirral Council Votes To Slash Services: What Now?

11-02-2009 00:15

When Wirral Council finally voted to go ahead with the Cabinet's proposed slashing of local services on 9th February, it caused anguish to the hundreds of people who have been campaigning for the last few months. Council employees are now set to lose their jobs at the worst possible time, as a global recession bites. Service users have lost access to libraries, leisure centres, and cultural venues. This terrible attack on ordinary people has shown the limitations of protests, letter-writing campaigns, and pinning hopes on politicians. The need for a new strategy has been highlighted.

Photo Report – Onboard Sea Shepherd Operation Musashi

10-02-2009 15:21

Sea Shepherd crew beneath the Jolly Roger flag on the ship's bow

This is a collection of photos from the first part of Operation Musashi, a campaign in which the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's ship the Steve Irwin and its crew braved the stormy waters of the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. The campaign is focused on enforcing the laws and regulations which are in place to protect the whales in the area. An illegal Japanese whaling fleet has been operating in this area for some years. Where governments and states fail to enforce the law to protect these magnificent and gentle giants of the oceans, Sea Shepherd will come to their aid. For more information see http://www.seashepherd.org

These photos are posted here with kind permission from the photographers Eric Cheng and Adam Lau. All are copyrighted.

Sea Shepherd Forced To Leave Killing Grounds In Antarctica

The Sea Shepherd ship the Steve Irwin and her crew have withdrawn from the Japanese whaling fleet to begin preparations to return with a faster and longer range ship.

"I have said always said that we would do everything we can short of hurting people to end illegal whaling in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary," said Captain Paul Watson. "We have done everything we could with the resources available to us this year. We have shut down their illegal operations for over a month in total. We have cost them money and we have saved the lives of a good many whales. And although we are willing to take the risks required, even to our own lives, I am not prepared to do to the Japanese whalers what they do to the whales and the escalating violence by the whalers will result in some serious injuries and possibly fatalities if this confrontation continues to escalate."

Why the police riot? - part 4

10-02-2009 03:13

Thames Valley Police FIT carry out a surveillance operation
The British police public order manual is a secret document establishing a paramilitary third force in the UK, under the control of a private company (ACPO) with permission from the home office. It's long overdue that more information about this was in the public domain.

This is part 4 of a series, for parts 1-3 see:
