Newcastle protest in solidarity with Yarl's Wood Hunger Strikers

Members of No Borders North East unfurled a banner from a rooftop in Newcastle city center this morning. They were showing their support for the women from Yarl's Wood detention center, who have been on hunger strike for several weeks, and demanding an end to immigration detention.

CAMPAIGNERS AGAINST UK COALS HUNTINGTON LANE SURFACE MINE were out on the bridges of Telford this morning, equipped with a large banner broadcasting their message of 'No New Coal'. The opencast coal site near New Works in Telford is due to commence operations in the near future.

Nottingham 114 Update

Of the 114 people arrested last Easter during the police raid on the Iona school, Nottingham, 26 have been charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated trespass at Ratcliffe on Soar power station. Over 10 months after their arrest, all 26 entered a plea of NOT GUILTY at Nottingham crown court on February 19th.

Welsh Refugee Council urgent call to stop detention and removal of 14 year old A

Welsh Refugee Council today called on UKBA and Cardiff Council to act quickly to release Mashal Jabari, 14 years of age, from Campsfield Immigration Removal Centre, and to suspend removal directions until a full assessment of his age can be made. Welsh Refugee Council does not normally comment on individual cases, but in this instance believes that there are compelling compassionate grounds why this boy should be allowed to remain in the UK.

The prosecution led the days argument they claimed by causing over a quarter of a million pounds worth of damage to EDO/ITT we in no way could have saved lives in the occupied territories. This therefore meant we had no right to a jury trial. The judge then asked the prosecution to provide evidence to substantiate such a claim, the prosecution had nothing to show.

The defence then came back to say there were two linked issues that required consideration.
i) The circumstances in which a judge may withdraw a defendant’s defence;
ii) Whether the facts relied on by the defendants’ amounts to a defence in law.

The points of law up for scrutiny were from the:

Criminal Damage Act 1971,
Criminal Law Act 1967,
The Common Law Defence of Necessity.
