Tyneside March Against Dawn Raids-Resistance to Deportations Continues to Build

On 20 January Tyneside Community Action for Refugees held a militant demonstration through the centre of Newcastle to protest against deportations of asylum seekers and to launch the pledge of resistance to snatch squads. Over 100 protesters from diverse communities marched under the banner ‘Here to Stay. Here to Fight. Defend Asylum Rights!’ and demanded an end to dawn raids, the name given to the brutal policy of snatching failed asylum seekers from their homes in the early hours of the morning.

When police crept down to Parliament Square in the middle of the night last May and removed most of Brian Haw's display, the were acting unlawfully. Superintendent Terry produced an undated document in Court signed by the Commissioner, delegating powers to him to impose conditions on demonstration. But Judge Purdy ruled today that the conditions were unlawful, the delegation was unlawful and so the raid must have been unlawful too.

Students hold a banner reading 'NO to new bases, nor at Dal Molin neither somewhere else', during a protest against the US military base in Vicenza, Italy. Italian Premier Romano Prodi announced Italy's government will not oppose the expansion of a U.S. military base in the northern city of Vicenza despite protests by area residents and some of his leftist political allies. The U.S. base in Vicenza has about 2,600 active duty military personnel. The expansion at the nearby Dal Molin airport would allow the military to move four battalions now based in Germany - adding another 1,600 active duty personnel.
