a 'love collective' took over the mantle of venus to keep the series of non-commercial valentine celebrations alive. although there was not much time to plan, a small crowd arrived, and with the help of a sound-system and a mixture of pagan and chinese new year ceremonies, love was spread to some of the shoppers and tourists passing through piccadilly circus.

[Brazil] Prestes Maia: largest urban area squat in South America faces imminent

Prestes Maia is the name gave to the building squatted by 486 families in downtown Sao Paulo, Brazil. For three years the families have been fighting against the eviction but since the beginning of the month a judge set up the deadline for the eviction for March 4th. Since them many social movements and groups have been supporting the Prestes Maia's families organizing solidarity actions in Sao Paulo and all around the globe. The last updated arrived from the families is that the military police will execute the eviction on February 25th, last Sunday of Brazil's carnival holidays.

if you've followed this issue on indymedia, the name 'barbara tucker' will be well-known to you. for over a year, metropolitan police have been harassing, hounding and assaulting this peaceful woman for doing no more than holding a pink banner in public in the socpa area. yet they have still not been able to defend their actions in court, and the stench of corruption grows stronger.
