As Europe stands accused of blocking the protection of intact natural forests and introducing logging-friendly language into the UN draft climate deal, we take a look at some of the key components that should be in an effective deal for saving the world’s forests. As Nathaniel Dyer of the Rainforest Foundation UK explains, saving forests is about a lot more than simply throwing money at the problem. Land rights, governance and demand management are also critical. And payment for forest protection should come from public funds rather than carbon markets.

Didcot protest over - 20 arrested

At 4.30 am, the nine occupiers of the chimney stack at Didcot power station came down and were immediately arrested. That brings the total arrests to 20, after the 11 locked on to the coal conveyors were arrested in the first 24 hours.

York Students Disrupt BAE Recruitment

A group of nearly 20 students took part in a non-violent intervention against the arms company BAE at today's University-wide careers fair, by staging a die in and handing out leaflets to passers by. The group, members of University of York's DISARM campaign, used the action to highlight BAE's impending trial for corruption.

Machines locked-on to at Mainshill again in two days of continuous action

At 7.30am this morning, two people locked-on to harvesting machinery attempting to make its way into Mainshill Wood, in an ongoing struggle to stop work at the site and stop Scottish Coal's attempts to turn the site into an opencast coal mine.

Campaigners protest outside the Home Office against Iraq deportations

About 50 people gathered outside the Home Office in central London demanding the immediate release of Iraqi detainees who were deported to Baghdad two weeks ago but were returned to detention after the Iraqi authorities refused to admit them. A number of them have been on hunger strike since Monday, 19th October, in protest at their continued detention and inhumane treatment. One of the hunger strikers addressed the crowd from detention via a phone-loud speaker link and read out a statement by the hunger strikers.
