The main SOAS building has been occupied by students and campaigners for the second day running over the detention and deportation of foreign cleaners and the management's sickening role in the orchestrated immigration raid on Friday, 12th June. Another rally was held today outside the building, followed by a march round the surrounding colleges. Here it is in pictures.

Green Kite Midnight - a new band created especially for street, benefit and maybe Climate Camp marquee - was spotted tonight serenading those attending the ceremony to announce the winner of the BP Portrait Award, those traditionally being ladies and gents plucked from the highest echelons of the ruling elite, not to mention a few grubby artists hoping to snatch first prize and 25 BP-donated grand.

Update from the SOAS occupation

Following a well-attended rally at 4:30, which was followed by a march round the Bloomsbury colleges, the occupiers had a long meeting to discuss their demands, some of which the director has already agreed on, while others are still being negotiated.

Just after 7pm, people were told by the management that the directors have left and negotiations will have to resume in the morning. The 'deadline' for getting back to them with the finalised demands was 7pm. Apparently they were too busy to wait for a few minutes!

Mass hunger strike in Yarls' Wood and riot in Brook House immigration prisons

No one in Yarlswood went to dinner last night and the hunger strike is continuing today. The managers of Yarlswood have met and are trying to see what to do, but are blocking the detainees from speaking to reporters and people outside the detention centre.

Campaigners disrupted an airport industry conference today using rape alarms tied to helium balloons . The protesters from the group Manchester Plane Stupid entered the Manchester Central conference venue (formerly GMEX) and sent five bunches of helium balloons reading 'Happy Retirement' to the top of the ceiling where they remained with the alarms ringing. This occurred at exactly the time when the industry delegates were posing for a photo shoot for the launch of a new carbon reduction scheme at European airports which will not include emissions from aircraft.

Eleven Activists Arrested as Trident Ploughshares Blockades Aldermaston

Blockade of home office gate
Trident Ploughshares activists working with Bikes Block Bombs, Scrap Cars-Scrap Trident, Aldermaston Women, and Eastern-region CND have blockaded 4 gates at AWE Aldermaston today. They are protesting at the building of new nuclear weapons facilities and the lack of democratic accountability.

The surprise blockades have caused massive road blockages and construction vehicles have been prevented from getting into Aldermaston.

Sikhs March in London against Caste Discrimination

Several thousand Ravidassia Sikhs marched through London on Sunday in protest against the killing of Sant Ramanand by fundamentalist SIkhs in VIenna last month. Although this provoked riots in India, the protest in London was peaceful, and as well as condeming the attack called of an end to caste discrimination by Sikhs which underlies the attack.

Report of anti-BNP march in Leeds

Somewhere between 300 and 500 gathered by Leeds Art Gallery today (Saturday) to oppose the BNP after their electoral success in Yorkshire and the Humber. Despite the police refusing permission, a march took place in which Anti-Fascists briefly reclaimed the streets of Leeds.
