Bosses of climate change research centre travel by private jet

I thought you might find the news below of interest and like to share it with your colleagues and supporters. The bosses of the National Oceanographic Centre in Southampton, which undertakes important climate change research, recently flew to a meeting in the US in a private jet. Staff that I know who work on climate change at the Centre are disgusted by this, but there is little they can do from the inside. So we would really appreciate it if you could spread the word and anyone who feels strongly might like to write a letter or email as suggested.

Letters from Kurdish deportees

These letters from a number of Iraqi-Kurdish asylum seeker who were forcibly deported on 5 September, 2006 (see  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2006/09/350214.html) were received by Dashty Jamal from the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees ( http://www.federasion.org). They were passed to the European Council Presidency on 11.10.2006 in European Parliament.

The Defence Export Services Organisation (DESO) spends £15 million a year of our taxes selling arms for British arms manufacturers, often to countries with poor human rights records or engaged in violent conflict. We contribute ten times as much to promoting arms sales than promoting civil exports. Cruelty to animals, destruction of the planet and exploitation of workers are three good reasons not to eat at McDonalds or other fast food chains such as Burger King and KFC. On a more personal level, the food has unhealthy levels of fats, sugar and salt, along with chemical additives that can cause ill-health and hyperactivity in children. This was the message handed out to those passing by the Leicester Square branch of the burger chain over Sunday lunchtime, London's contribution to the 21st Global Day of Action Against McDonalds (which actually is on 16 October every year.)

On Sunday morning, folks turned out to take part in the Worldwide Day of Action Against McDonalds. Nottingham's contibution to this, took place from 12noon at Exchange Walk in the City Centre.

Teresa Lau Manuel Must Stay in Leicester

Teresa Lau Manuel
Teresa came to Leicester on 25 March 2004. She spoke Kikongo and Portuguese, and so went to Leicester College to learn English. She followed this with a Child Care course at Leicester College that she completed in July 2006. Her certificate says "to have achieved it required determination and skill, qualities which help you shape a valuable career". Teresa now faces removal from the UK on Friday 20th October 2006.
