Monday 6 August 2007: The election is over and the result found Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) back in power, but only through a coalition with la Alianza con el Verde Ecologista. But those who refused to vote across Oaxaca were nearly 80 percent.

Locking up innocent people in detention centres - or immigration removal centres (IRCs) as they are now called, is not only cruel, inhumane and degrading: it is unworkable.
Hunger strikes and uprisings have been part of life in detention centres since these monstrous institutions first opened, but have dramatically escalated in the past few years as the UK government are detaining increasing numbers of increasingly desperate people.

Solidarity On Birkenhead Posties Picket Line

On Thursday, 02.08.07 along with other posties throughout the country Birkenhead sorting office mounted a picket some 20 strong from 05.30 to 09.00. At approx 07.30 a lorry full of mail from the Chester hub came to deliver.(this would mean that mail would be waiting to be sorted from 5.30 the next day) After consultation with the picket and to the furious dismay of a manager the driver turned his truck around, unloaded back to the hub at Chester.

Nottingham City Council fires threats in welfare advice row

It was one of those things that the City Council wouldn't want to kick up a fuss about. After all, it was a bit of a controversial decision to merge the city's welfare rights department into the management of the housing benefit service back in September 2006. Employees were only told about the decision 2 or 3 days before it was implemented and were told in an email to 'keep quiet' about the issue. You can imagine people getting concerned over 'conflicts of interest' when you're supposed to get impartial and independent advice on welfare rights from people in the very same office as those authorizing the actual applications.
