RAF Brize Norton blockaded, 12th Aug 2006

12-08-2006 21:08

RAF Brize Norton - State terror is terrorism
A protest called at very short notice outside the main gates of RAF Brize Norton had the unexpected effect of closing the main gates, and possibly the entire base, to all traffic for nearly two hours. Brize Norton is one of the RAF bases reportedly being used to refuel planes delivering bombs from the US to Israel for use in the ongoing massacre of Lebanon. Meanwhile a peace camp is being established nearby to watch for further such flights. Some photos of the day are attached, and with a bit of luck a movie of the more exciting bits should materialise here later.

swimming against the G8
“Camp Inski”, the preparation and information camp for the forthcoming G8 summit in Germany drew to a close on 11 August with a direct action “bathing day” on the beach outside the Hotel Kempinski where the summit will be help. Approximately 400 people followed the call and arrived at the beach from various directions. There were various actions to Samba sounds - apart from the communal swim, a building was briefly occupied, highlighting the expropriation of the Kempinski family by the Nazis. Police used heavy handed tactics, pepperspray and batons when a train was occupied.

Lebanese Hospitals Under Threat From Fuel Crisis - Thurs 10th Aug - Photo Report

11-08-2006 23:39

.
I’m at the Government University to talk to Bilal Masri, the assistant general director of the Government University Hospital. The Government has announced that the hospitals are in danger of running out of fuel for their generators. ‘So far we are doing OK. We think we have fuel for the generators for another week to ten days running at our present capacity. This is about 25% of what is usual. We are saving electricity wherever possible. We keep essential operations like ER and ICU running. Everywhere else electricity is a commodity. If the situation continues to escalate and the Israelis stop the fuel ship from docking in the port, then we could see an energy crisis in the whole country - not just the hospital.’

Dhayiya. Attacked Again - Wed 9th Aug - Photo Report

11-08-2006 23:26

.
We heard on the news that the Israelis had yet again bombed the south Beirut district of Dhayiya. After trying in vain to persuade numerous cab drivers to take us there we eventually secure a lift. Soon after we arrive we realised our mistake. We have landed in an area, without first seeking permission from Hizbollah. The fact that there was no checkpoint or local cordon is no excuse. We are now in a ghost town with around a kilometre to walk out, and on our own. The driver has left at considerable speed.

Activists Help Lebanese Refugee Kids - Tues 8th Aug - Photo Report

11-08-2006 23:22

.
Today I join activists from the Zico House Social Centre who are on a mission to cheer up the refugee children in this district. The centre had previously been home to a meeting space as well as offices for various progressive groups. The activists have well and truly risen to the challenge that they have been faced with, as hundreds of thousands of refugees had flooded in from the south of the city and the country. They have organised into committees to deal with different aspects of the daunting refugee situation. I am with the group that has formed to help the children of the refugees have some quality of life while they remain in overcrowded centres with little or nothing to do.

SchNEWS - Axis Of Oil - Why the west sits back while Lebanon is battered

11-08-2006 16:40

Israel - Lebanon - Resolution Negotiation
As SchNEWS goes to print it seems as if attempts in the UN to obtain a ceasefire between Hizbollah and Israel have failed. As Israel pours more troops across Lebanon’s borders, the war’s escalation threatens a cataclysm. Is Lebanon destined to play the overture to a far wider middle-eastern war? It is this fear coupled with solidarity with the Lebanese people which has sparked a resurgence in the UK anti-war movement.

Sanayaa Park Refugee Centre, Lebanon - Sun August 6th - Photo Report

11-08-2006 16:15

.
Sanayaa Park is one of the many homes to the thousands of refugees that are flooding into Beirut at present. The small ornamental garden near the Beirut financial district has become a village for people fleeing from the south or southern Beirut suburbs. It is hot and dusty and hundreds of families sleep on mats in the open air with no shelter and few facilities. Sleep is difficult with the constant sound of bombing and sonic booms from Israeli fighter jets.
