Mersey's waste dumped in Wrexham - update and call for action

Mersey Waste Holdings began dumping Merseyside's waste in Wales today, at Hafod Quarry, Johnstown, near Wrexham. The entrance to the site was blockaded for a while this morning until police removed the protesters. More support needed from Wrexham and Merseyside people to stop this happening.

As reported previously, Johnstown residents have been campaigning for years via legal channels to stop this happening, but dumping started this morning, aided and abetted by the police, who removed the blockaders.

More support desperately needed.

Hafod Quarry is approximately 2 miles from Ruabon railway station. From the station approach road, turn left onto the main road in the direction of Wrexham. Just before you go under the railway bridge (maybe half a mile), turn right into a housing estate - follow the main road through this estate which will take you to the quarry. Ask any local person to check you're on the right road. Coming by road - from the A483, take the Johnstown/Bangor turn-off (B5426). Turn onto the B5426 heading towards Johnstown (right turn if you're coming from Chester/Wrexham direction). The quarry is at the first turning on the left.

If you can't come to Wrexham in person, contact the company: Mersey Waste Holdings. Their address is 2nd Floor, Port of Liverpool Building, Liverpool, L3 1BY. Tel: 0151 255 0044, Fax: 0151 255 0019 Email:  enquiries@merseywaste.co.uk. Names and contact details of all the elected representatives on the Mersey Waste Disposal Authority (Mersey Waste Holdings is an 'arms length' company of MWDA) can be found here:  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2006/08/348841.html

It simply is not acceptable for Merseyside to use Wales as its dumping ground. We will not allow this to happen and we're sure that many Merseyside people will support us in this protest. If we allow this to go ahead, Wales could end up as England's dumping ground as English authorities use a legal loophole to get round the requirement to cut landfill (if it goes to Wales, it doesn't count).
