Empire as a Way of Life, Part 7

15-05-2007 10:11

Audio

The current imperial slaughter in the Middle East, justified by the "Global War on Terror", that has resulted in at least 600,000 deaths in Iraq, is nothing new — the U.S. Empire has a long and sordid history of genocidal mass murder.

The history of the US imperialism and Empire is the subject of a series of ten monthly seminars from Dr John Marciano, "Empire as a Way of Life". Attached is a recording of the third of these seminars and the text upon which it was based. The first 8 of these seminars have taken place and the intention is to have the whole series published on this site; the last 2 will take place between now and June.

This seminar, recorded on 20th March 2007 by the L.A. Sound Posse, runs for 44 minutes and includes the discussion following. It has been made available under a Creative Commons license. If this recording is broadcast please let the L.A. Sound Posse know. This recording was originally made available on the A-Infos Radio Project site.

The following text has been reproduced here with the kind permission of Dr John Marciano and he can be contacted at johnmarciano@mac.com. He introduced this series of seminars in the following way:

A fundamental purpose of our meetings is to understand the systemic nature of the U.S. Empire and the economic and military imperialism that is its lifeblood. The historian William Appleman Williams argues that empire became "a way of life" in the U.S., a "combination of patterns of thought and action that, as it becomes habitual and institutionalized, defines the thrust and character of a culture and society." This "way of life" has convinced many U.S. "Americans" they have a right or "manifest destiny" to impose their political and economic policies upon others.

Dr John Marciano is Professor Emeritus, State University of New York at Cortland, where he taught courses on social and historical foundations of education and class, gender and race.

Indepth Interview with the Pedal Powered Clowns

14-05-2007 18:46

Audio
Four activists left Nottingham today to travel into Europe and to G8 summit in Germany and eventually Palestine. Their project is all about cycling, communicating, taking action and general clowning about. Where are they going? What will they be doing? Why go to Palestine? Why is it important to go to the G8 summit in Germany? Last week I got my audio device out and invited them around for tea and cake.

The beginning of the recording is slightly disturbed by one of the younger clowns... Download the individual soundfiles or listen to the entire interview (38,4 minutes) via the stream:  http://www.archive.org/download/pedal_powered_clowns/pedal_powered_clowns_64kb.m3u

Pedal Powered Activists from Nottingham set off for Palestine

14-05-2007 14:04

Three of the adventurers
This morning 4 activists, based at the ASBO Community Centre in Nottingham got on their bikes and set off for an epic journey to mainland Europe. The project 'Pedal Powered Clowns to Palestine' brings together performance, clowning, action and pedal power to raise awareness of the situation in Palestine as well as entertaining and supporting the Palestinian Community through play. In the last few months the group raised money through benefit events in Nottingham to fund their trip. The first leg of the journey will be by train to Hull and then onto the ferry to Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Once in Europe a few dates have been planned to work with other groups and visit some social centres. From then on the route will lead North into Germany to the G8 summit in early June. The idea is to join the G8 protests and add a creative element to the planned actions. At the end of June the group will set course for Palestine.

Here are some photos of the groups departure. Of course some of it was last minute but all set of with a feel of excitement. When we arrived at the train station some of the transport bobbies showed interest in the trailers, which I thought would never make it onto the train, but after some chat with the conductor they were all boarded on...

London Solidarity Protest Against G8 Repression

14-05-2007 11:53

protesters standing on the pavement by the Kempinski hotel

About 50 people gathered at the Kempinski Hotel in London on Friday, 11 May, to show their solidarity with the victims of the G8 raids in Germany last week, and to express their opposition to the G8, capitalism and all that [call]. Kempinski is the hotel group hosting the G8 Summit in Heiligendamm, Germany, next month.

The Met had 'designated' a pen on the opposite side of the street, but protesters refused to be penned in and stayed by the hotel, without entirely blocking the pavement. Some leaflets were given out and not much more happened.. well, apart from the FIT struggling to get good shots of people's faces.

Brazil: Bush-Lula biofuel plans based on conditions worse than slavery

14-05-2007 09:33

The recent proclamation of an “ethanol alliance” between US President George W. Bush and Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva has been hailed by apologists for both governments as an advance in the development of alternative sources of energy and a gain for both countries’ economies. In Brazil, this sector is expected to record export earnings of $7 billion this year, and both countries are mounting a drive to increase the production of Brazilian sugarcane.
