'Keep Your Blood Service Local' Birmingham Banner Drop

31-07-2007 11:04

'Keep Your Blood Service Local' Banner Drop

Early this morning a banner was hoisted between two trees opposite the entrance to Birmingham's National Blood Service on Vincent Drive, Edgbaston. The banner proclaims 'Keep Your Blood Centre Local' and was positioned in full view of staff working at the Blood Service. This is in response to the National Blood Service (NBS) Directors plans to centralise our blood service by closing blood processing and testing labs at 10 local centres in favour of just 3 supercentres in Bristol, Manchester and London. 100s of technical staff, about half the lab workforce, face redundancy. If these plans are implemented then they will effectively rip the heart out of our National Blood Service. The proposed cuts will seriously undermine the services provided and emergencies, such as rushing washed blood platelets to patients, will be compromised.

Urgent Call for Support - Anarchists Against the Wall

28-07-2007 11:08

The following call is from the Anarchists Against the Wall email list.

The Israeli anarchists are well known and respected by all Palestinian non-violence leaders. They are the only Israeli group that consistently and regularly turns up at Palestinian demonstrations and one of (very) few anti-Zionist groups in Israel today.

As such, the state is of course persecuting them and they are regularly detained, questioned or even sent to jail. They have a LOT of legal costs. Gaby Lasky is a tireless and committed human rights lawyer who has represented many Palestinian, Israeli and international anti-occupation activists.

Please support them!

Another London Critical Mass police hassle.

28-07-2007 07:14

Police routinely interfere with Critical Mass, holding up the front of the ride, targeting sound systems and sometimes ticketing riders. They also video and photograph riders at the start of every event. It is odd though that they never turn up for the December ride, which is close to the New year celebrations.

Heathrow seek ridiculous injunction against potentially millions of people

27-07-2007 09:33

The British Airport Authority (BAA), who owns Heathrow Airport, is to seek one of the biggest injuctions affecting peaceful protest in Britain's history. They hope to obtain it through the High Court next week and is it set to affect millions of people. According to reports by the Independent, the injunction will ban members of the National Trust, the RSPB, the Woodland Trust and Friends of the Earth, from entering Britain's biggest airport. Other no-go zones include the Piccadilly line. And parts of Paddington station. And sections of the M4. And all this: 'because the authorities want to halt a protest against climate change'.

BAA Heathrow Injunction Targets NGOs and Climate Camp! Huge Implications...

27-07-2007 09:27

BAA is seeking to gain an unwarrented injunction against environmental campaigners to prevent them protesting against climate change and the expansion of heathrow airport.

The story featured two days ago in the Uxbridge Gazette:
 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/07/377010.html

Since then, the scale of the injunction BAA is seeking has become clear. They have targeted not only groups related to the forthcoming Camp for Climate Action, but also several campaign groups composed of local people opposing the airport's expansion, and even mass membership organisations like The National Trust, FOE, RSPB, Greenpeace, as well as the Campaign to Protect Rural England and others!

The injunction hearing which could see millions of people liable for arrest if they approach heathrow, will be heard next wednesday.

The Independent newspaper put the story frontpage today, and it's now been featured by BBC, Guardian, and other news sources. More details below:
