Birmingham Says No to Racist Scumbag Cllr. John Lines' Mayoral Appointment

28-04-2012 17:51

Demo Against the Mayoral Appointment of Racist Scumbag Cllr. John Lines

The Second City Doesn't Deserve a Violent Racist as it's First Citizen

About a dozen members of West Midlands No Borders were met with enthusiasm and interest today, as they staged an info picket outside of the Birmingham City Council house. Their presence confronted the racist violence of soon-to-be-Mayor, Councillor John Lines, and the benefactors of Lines’ privatisation of Asylum Seeker housing, global security company G4S.

Large banners spanning the entrance of the Council House that read: “No To Racist Scumbag Mayor Lines” and “G4S will screw you 2” were the backdrop as passers-by stopped, despite the cold rain, to express their support.

“I wish I had a picture of this” said one passerby, “he really is a racist!”

In a surreal twist the protest was joined by 300 Justin Bieber fans, who had heard rumours that Bieber was staying at the hotel.

Noam Chomsky on America's Declining Empire, #Occupy and the Arab Spring

25-04-2012 21:04

Audio
Last year, the Occupy Movement rose up spontaneously in cities and towns across the country, radically shifted the discourse and rattled the economic elite with its defiant populism. It was, according to Noam Chomsky, “the first major public response to thirty years of class war.” In his new book, Occupy  https://www.alternet.org/alternetbooks/28/occupy/ , Chomsky looks at the central issues, questions and demands that are driving ordinary people to protest. How did we get to this point? How are the wealthiest 1 percent influencing the lives of the other 99 percent? How can we separate money from politics? What would a genuinely democratic election look like?

On my way to work this morning I found the bus stops around New Cross bus garage swarming with police and UKBA immigration officers.
