The gentrification of free festivals
30-04-2007 21:17
It is spring equinox, the moon is bright. I had sweet-talked some sweet foreigners into attending the Beltane festival on Calton Hill in Edinburgh tonight. It used to be a great festival, music, fire, dance. I've been about 5 times over it's 20 year history, but I've been busy with war stuff for the past 3 years. I did go the year it was 'banned' ( http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2003/05/66387.html ) and I was one of the people who ignored the council bouncers and took down the barriers. I've done other stuff to help out too, and when they started asking for donations, I was happy to donate.Bin revolution gathers pace

30-04-2007 08:41
The new Points-Based System (PBS), will gradually come into force in 2008. According to the Home Office, the "starting point is that employers should look first to recruit from the UK and the expanded EU before recruiting migrants from outside the EU".URGENT: British resident in Guantánamo Bay released to Morocco "disappears"

Re: Your ‘British Values’ are Alien to Our Human ValuesSir, this is an open letter to you, and I’d prefer that you respond to me openly, and act upon it in the short time that you have left. I know it is long, but there is no short way of putting it. The Home Secretary and the Minister of State for Immigration both have my contacts, or you can reply on my email below. Detention of Asylum Seekers and Immigrants in the UK
28-04-2007 20:34
I am an asylum seeker who has experienced arbitrary detention in the UK for immigration purposes. I am also a national of a former British colony, where internment and detention were used to control the freedom movement of whole communities. I have strong criticisms of the use of internment and detention of a particular group of people as a form of control or punishment without any regard for justice.York Action For Animals

28-04-2007 19:18
The Government are consulting on the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO) - which sets targets for the use of biofuels. An increasing share of biofuels comes from the global South and is grown at the expense of rainforests, local communities and food sovereignty. Far from reducing emissions, the RTFO will accelerate climate change by triggering more deforestation.
