Tilting at Windmills: The Future of the Climate Change Movement

04-08-2008 18:23

This essay, to be discussed at climate camp, elucidates some current problems with the Climate Camp, as demonstrated by the repression on the Kingsnorth, and demonstrate that a future trajectory can overcome them: just as the anti-roads movement transformed into the anti-globalisation movement in the UK by moving to the focus to the city and capitalism, moving the camps from the countryside to the city would make victory again possible.

Social War Not Climate Chaos Meetings at Camp

04-08-2008 18:11

Social War Not Climate Chaos! Starting Tuesday, daily meetings at the Scottish Barrio from 5-7 PM will explore how the climate crisis, a facet of the more general latest crisis in capitalism itself, can be used to build a new kind of autonomous social movement constituted as a material force...a force capable of confronting and ultimately halting capitalism. These meetings are not on the official climate camp workshop list, of course.

Report Back From the Green Spirituality “ Friend or Foe” Workshop Monday 4th Aug

04-08-2008 16:30

Chris Philpott gave a little talk about how Green Spirituality can be a friend of the Climate Change Movement. He explored the commonality of spiritual teachings that pointed to the spiritual causes of Climate Change. He said that one cause was the drive of greed and materialism fuelled by consumerism, as this was shown as a danger and distraction to spiritual progress in the Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Bahai, Islamic, Hindu, and other spiritual traditions. Another spiritual cause of climate change was identified as how we have lost our connection with nature, which was illustrated in the teachings of Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Shamanism, Paganism and other spiritual traditions. A further spiritual cause of climate change was pointed out to be our collective bad karma which was explained in the teachings of Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism and other spiritual traditions. Finally he pointed out that a spiritual cause of climate change was our loss of balance in our lives which was emphasised in the teachings of Islam, Taoism, Hinduism, and other spiritual traditions.

Climate Camp Day One Summaries

03-08-2008 19:49

The media 'village' now has it's full complement of structures and although some are literally held up with bits of string, it's looking good despite being two days behind schedule. Everything is running behind thanks to continuing vindictive obstruction by the police.
