Email alert: Stop more deforestation biofuels and peat burning as 'green energy'

On 10th January, the European Commission is expected to make a final decision on the European Biomass Plan. There are serious concerns that they will promote ever more biofuels from palm oil, soya and sugar cane linked to rainforest destruction, peat drainage, biodiversity losses and, in some cases, human rights abuses. There is even pressure on them to class and supoort peat as a source of 'renewable biomass'. Please write to the European Commission today to express concerns.

More troops to Iraq = more genocide

The new year is set to see more imperial genocide in Iraq as the US increases troop numbers. 61% of the population of Iraq support attacks on the troops of the imperial occupation - things are simply going to get worse, much worse. The number killed by the imperial occupation already dawarfs those killed, with western support, by Saddam. Downing Street and the White House are occupied by genocidal, psycopath, war criminals.

Rising seas attributed to human induced global warming have submerged Lohachara island, once the home to 10,000 people. Unhinhabited Suparibhanga has also vanished, while the inhabited island of Ghoramara has lost two thirds of its area to the rising seas in the Bay of Bengal.

“Gorleben suitable, but seeking other sites”

The German environment minister says the salt deposit in Gorleben is geologically suitable for a final nuclear waste depository but other locations will be considered.
“The findings so far about a dense rock cover and hence the barrier function of the salt were positively confirmed,” wrote the minister, Sigmar Gabriel, in response to an open letter from opponents of nuclear installations in the north German village.

Aberdeen Campaign against Climate Change demonstrate against airport expansion

On December 13th 2006 Aberdeen Campaign Against Climate Change held a demonstration outside the Town House in Aberdeen where councillors were considering the planning application for an extension to the runway of Aberdeen Airport. Twenty people took part in the protest. Disappointingly, the application was approved by a large majority.

Anti Lydd Airport statement from LAAG.

Lydd Airport bossses have today lodged a planning application to Shepway District Council for expansion.
Both group in the area are gearing up to respond to this and fight it all the way during next year. SDC are likely to put the plans out for wide consultation during first half of 2007.
