11-08-2012 10:20

Renewable energy from hydro-electric power on the River Don came a step closer with the announcement this week of the launch of the campaign to raise finance for the scheme at Blackburn Meadows on the Sheffield/Rotherham border. Community energy group Sheffield Renewables is launching a Community Share offer to raise the £250,000 needed to begin construction of the Archimedean screw development in 2013. Supporters of the scheme will be asked to invest £250 per share and it is hoped to raise the funds in three months with the rest of the finance being made available through commercial loans.

Tar Free Towns [  http://tarfreetowns.org/what-is-a-tar-free-town/ ] is an idea we had a little while ago, which originated from the desire to connect people in the UK with communities fighting tar sands in Canada, by supporting and encouraging hubs of tar sands activism to flourish in the UK.

Take Back the Land! - short action film

02-08-2012 19:12

On the 12th July we squatted Scottish Coal's new opencast site in the Douglas Valley at Glentaggart East for a week-long action camp. Folk came from all over to stand in solidarity with local people and to stop the destruction and injustice of opencast coal mining. The film below documents a few of the actions that took place during the camp including a mass action that shut down Mainshill Open Cast Coal Site, a morning blockade of Broken Cross Open Cast Coal Site and the opencasting of landowner Lord Home's front garden.

Take Back the Land: Action Round-Up

26-07-2012 09:56

Mass action at Mainshill
A week ago today the last of the camp was taken down and participants at Take Back the Land! ( http://takebacktheland.org.uk/) were saying goodbye for now to our site on the edge of 350ha of bog and wet heath moorland – the proposed new Glentaggart East site ( http://coalactionscotland.org.uk/?page_id=2570). The camp was occupied on the evening of the 10th July and set up on the symbolic site of Scottish Coal’s new mine in the Douglas Valley, a beautiful part of the Southern Uplands. The occupation was the third in the area since 2009 and part of Coal Action Scotland’s four-year old direct action campaign against opencast coal mining in the Douglas Valley.

Aristocrat landlord’s garden opencasted!

18-07-2012 12:39

Earlier today activists from Take Back the Land! visited Lord Home’s mansion in the Douglas Valley and opencasted his garden, hoping to bring the issues closer to home for him. Lord Home owns Mainshill and all of Glentaggart East which is currently being occupied by an action camp. Of course only some of the things that impact communities so much would have been felt because of this opencast, such as seeing a big mess. He won’t have to put up with the health impacts from dust and diesel fumes, the danger on the roads, the noise, contempt from South Lanarkshire Council – the list goes on.

Broken Cross Open Cast Site blockaded – police act as Scottish Coal security

16-07-2012 10:27

This morning Broken Cross opencast site in the Douglas Valley was blockaded for an hour and a half before Scottish Coal workers lifted three people in heavy concrete lock-ons out of the road, all overseen by Inspector Whip (photographed) of Strathclyde Police. This isn’t the first time that Inspector Whip has hurt people by lifting them out of the road. He’s reckless and deliberately put people’s safety at risk, all to protect the profits of Scottish Coal.
