Iraq deportation protest in Parliament Sq

19-10-2009 15:41

Anti-deportation campaigners gathered in Parliament Square, London, on Saturday, 17th October, to protest against the first (failed) mass deportation flight to Baghdad.

The demonstration, called by the Stop Deportation Network and the International Federation of Iraqi Refugee, saw protesters holding banners and placards and shouting slogans against forcible deportation in general and to a war zone like Iraq in particular.

Speakers, including veteran anti-war protester Brian Haw, denounced the British government's hypocrisy and its role in creating the Iraqi refugee crisis through its involvement in the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Two deportees, who had been returned to Brook House detention centre after the flight was turned away at Baghdad airport by the Iraqi authorities, also spoke on the phone and told protesters, via a megaphone, of the violence and mistreatment they had experienced during the deportation at the hands of immigration officers and private security guards.

Translated statement of the occupied town hall, Nikaia, Athens, Greece

17-10-2009 19:00

#105 | Town hall of Nikaia, Athens is occupied after demo for the police killing of Mohammad Atif Kamran; statement by the occupation’s assembly.

Mohammad Atif Kamran was a 25-year old migrant from Pakistan. On September 26, Mohammad’s house was raided by police who beat him, dragged him to the local police station and tortured him. On October 10, Mohammad passed away (more on his case here).

Today, a week after Mohammad’s death, a demonstration was called at Nikaia, the Athens suburb where he lived, by anarchist groups. At the end of the demonstration, some people entered the local town hall and occupied – as of now (19.00 GMT) the occupation continues.

What follows is a rough translation of the assembly of the occupied town hall.

Arora, the latest detention profiteer

16-10-2009 14:22

Activists from No Borders London staged a protest last week inside the Arora International Hotel, near Heathrow airport, against the hotel owners' plans to turn one of their other hotels, at Gatwick airport, into an immigration prison. Driven by what appears to be a decline in business, Arora Management Services had applied to the Crawley Borough Council for permission to convert its four-star hotel, Mercure, into an immigration detention centre. As one of the protesters put it, "this is just another example of the cynical, profit-driven opportunism exhibited by big companies wanting a slice of the lucrative detention market."

16-10-2009 11:02

The first deportation to Baghdad deported around forty people early on Thursday the 15th October on a specially chartered plane provided by Air Italy . We have since learnt that ten of the detained people were taken off the flight in Baghdad while the other detainees were not accepted by the Iraqi government and were flown back to detention in the UK. A Home Office statement has said they will "iron out" the difficulties they faced and "expect to carry out another flight".

Campaign Against Air Italy

15-10-2009 10:16

There has been a steady increase in the number of charter flights by UKBA to remove those who have failed to be recognized as refugees from the UK

There does not seem to be a fixed contract with any one air line, each charter flight seems to have a different carrier.

NCADC suspect that this is a deliberate policy by UKBA to try and prevent Anti-Deportation protesters, from targetting airlines.

Calais mon amour

15-10-2009 03:23

After the destruction of Pashto jungle the 22nd September, all other camps and squats are being dismantled,
old camps and squats as well as the new camps people set up after they are first evicted.
The tactic is always the same, massive police operations involving up to hundreds of riot police, who surround the camps from every side and arrest everybody.
After that, the diggers move in and destroy everything, the shelters with the people's few possessions.
