No Border Camp in Imatra, Finland 9.-16.7.2004

Imatra is a small town with a population of 30 000 in eastern Finland, right next to the Russian border. Just beyond this division of the world's second biggest poverty gap (right after the border of Mexico and US) is another small town called Svetogorsk with population of only 15 000. The close proximity of the border has an effect on the local communities on both sides in a very concrete way.

Close Campsfield Demo

On the 29th of may there was a demo for the closure of Campsfield "house". The name disguises the true nature of the place, which over the past ten years since it was built,has been detaining asylum seekers who have committed no crime. In the current political climate evermore hostile toward asylum seekers there are plans to expand the structure to "accomodate" even more than the current maximum of 200.

Deported Woman Tells of Torture in Britain

A middle-aged woman with facial injuries and her six-year-old daughter were yesterday admitted to a city hospital after being deported from Britain.
Ms Bernice Wairimu Kamau had a swollen neck and cheeks, and wore a bandage on either arm following injuries she says were caused by British officials.

Hunger strike refugees evicted in Glasgow

Three Iranian Kurdish asylum seekers who recently came close to death in a hunger strike in protest at their treatment and the unjust UK asylum system, have today been evicted from their flat. Although they cannot return to Iran, they now have no entitlement to housing or financial support.
