Lydia Besong and her husband Bernard Batey fled Cameroon and came to the UK seeking asylum on 17 December 2006. On 29 October 2009 the couple returned to their home in Rochdale to find a letter from the Border and Immigration Agency informing them that they must return to Cameroon, where Lydia she is still wanted by the authorities since escaping prison.

Students thrown off English course at Manchester College

Last week a passenger protest saved Rose-Jane and baby Natale from deportation, when some passengers on the Nairobi-bound flight refused to fasten their safety belts after receiving leaflets at Heathrow. Today packs including blankets, ponchos, tarpaulins and hygiene packs were distributed to more than 200 people by Médecins du Monde [1] in central Calais. British, French and Italian activists from Calais Migrant Solidarity [2] and No Borders [3] joined the event with an exhibition of recent police repression in and around Calais, a banner was hung from the church saying ‘To Migrate is to Resist’ and leaflets were distributed.

Yarl's Wood blockader released after 8 days in prison

Zelda Jeffers, who was sentenced to 16 days in prison for refusing to pay a fine following a blockade of Yarl's Wood detention centre in July 2009, was released today after serving only half her term (8 days). Arriving home this afternoon, she sent an email saying, "I am safely home and very unbowed."

Campaigners hold second protest against plans to turn Gatwick hotel into a detention centre

5th November 2009, 7pm

* Arora Management Services Ltd plans to turn its four-star Mercure Gatwick hotel into an immigration detention centre.

* Campaigners vow to target Arora and Mercure until the plans are dropped.

Anti-detention campaigners are currently holding a peaceful protest at the Mercure London City Bankside Hotel (71-79 Southwark Street SE1 0JA) against what they describe as the hotel company's "cynical, profit-driven opportunism." They are distributing leaflets to staff and guests, demanding that Mercure/Arora drops its plans to turn one of its hotels into an immigration prison.
