A group of prisoners at a privately run jail near Rugby 'went wild' on Monday, June 25th. The inmates took control of one wing at the Rye Hill prison, which is run by GSL, for almost two hours in the afternoon. A team of specially trained and equipped staff were then brought in and regained control of the wing. A spokesman for GSL said that, despite some damage at the prison, there were "no injuries to either staff or inmates".

A few hundred people turned up today, at the end of Refugee Week, for a rally in Birmingham organised by the Anti-Racist Campaign (ARC) to highlight the bitter realities suffered by refugees and asylum seekers in Britain and to protest against the Home Office's war on them. The event, which took place outside the Council House in Victoria Square, saw polemic speeches by members of migrant communities and groups, as well as Nottingham Zimbabwean band Ngoma, who played African Roots and Reggae "songs of freedom" throughout the afternoon.

Keep Your Blood Service Local
The National Blood Service in the UK is ploughing ahead with a hotly disputed strategy of reconfiguration. Directors plan to close blood processing and testing labs at 10 local centres in favour of just 3 supercentres in Bristol, Manchester and Colindale (London). 100s of technical staff - about half the lab workforce - face redundancy.
Vigil, party and sleep-out in solidarity with refugees in Birmingham
As part of Refugee Week, the Birmingham Anti-Racist Campaign (ARC) organised a candlelit vigil today to remember asylum seekers who took their own lives and protest against the government's racist policies. After reading out the 40+ victims' sad stories and some short speeches, there was some nice African, Kurdish and Iranian live music. Food Not Bombs also served some nice food. Many people then stayed over for the annual Refugee Sleep-out to highlight the problem of destitution that many asylum seekers suffer from. The event was sponsored by Celebrating Sanctuary and supported by many groups and organisations, including the National Coalition of Anti-Deportation Campaigns and Birmingham NoBorders.

Eco Fair Success
Who would ever have thought that REDDITCH could be home to a vibrant `green` movement?!!! But that`s exactly what is taking shape in Redditch right now. The Redditch Green Fair held on Sat 2nd June, was by far the biggest eco-event ever held in the town, and the grassroots organisers have pledged that next year, the fair will be even bigger and better!

The US embargo on trade with Cuba continues. This summer Pastors for Peace will again challenge the blockade with a friendship caravan. A fully stocked bookmobile will accompany it. Before the revolution there were only 32 libraries in Cuba. In 2002 there were 400 public libraries and 6000 school libraries. Cubans are avid readers and life long learners but Cuban librarians struggle to meet their needs under the blockade.
