Inside the IOM Birmingham conference

the conference room.. half empty at the beginning

After leafleting the delegates and staff and doing a banner drop at the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) 'conference' in Birmingham on June 25th (see here), my fellow protesters left for work, leaving me alone to the boring presentations at the four-star hotel of Marriott. It is not very usual for activists to get to attend such events and I did get sick of it all after the first session. But what I heard and read is probably worth a report.. to give campaigners a glimpse into the world of IOM that they wouldn't normally get through protests and actions.

$tarbuck$-Brum Union bustin' Protest

An Injury to one... Saturday 5th July- as part of an international day of action against the latest illegal sackings of union activists in Michigan, USA and Seville, Spain, the West Midlands IWW helped organise a protest picket outside the main Starbucks store in Birmingham. The general public were very supportive of the protest. We were surprised how much people hated starbucks. The store manager hated the fact it the store was half empty, just like their tills.

IOM's new Birmingham office

IOM's newsletter announcing the new office(s) After a prestigious conference last week (see  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/birmingham/2008/06/401910.html), the International Organisation against Migrants, aka the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), has opened a new office in Birmingham (details below). The intergovernmental agency is apparently growing bigger and more 'efficient' as the government is stepping up its deportation plans. In addition to its UK head office in London, IOM has offices Bristol, Glasgow and Liverpool, and has recently open a new office in Leeds. It is further planning to open two new sub-offices, one is known to be in Peterborough.

Let's tell them they are not welcome here, in Birmingham, or anywhere else!

Outrageous demands for more money

IOM Unwelcomed in Birmingham

the welcome desk and conference room The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) today held a 'conference' in Birmingham in preparation for opening a new regional office in the city. A handful of local activists braved the morning showers and went down to the venue, the four-star hotel of Marriott in Five Ways, to unwelcome the dodgy organisation. Armed with a banner that read "International Organisation Against Migrants" and leaflets exposing "the truth about IOM", they confronted attendees as they walked in and offered them a dose of truth to help them digest the lies they would later get in their welcome packs and the marketing-style presentations. The IOM staff, however, were highly diplomatic (or confused) and did not call the police or try to kick them out. The IOM Communications Director even invited them to go in and "raise their questions inside", as some invitees did not apparently turn up and some seats were left embarrassingly empty. One of the protesters later commented: "This is the funniest action I've ever done!"

Stop posion drinking water flouride, paystrike, companies cant legally turn it off

Many water companies in UK including Severn Trent maybe using anaerobic digesters to recover phosphate & fertilise crops& burn methane but some in west midlands & nottingham are using flouride in water supply. So bad that the area it is added has to have glass windows regularly replaced due to flourides corrosion. Strike legally they cant legally turn off water, its legally our right to have a supply. Especially worth it if your not bothered about your credit rating on own or in shared house
