Demonstration Against Ugandan Human Rights Abuse, London 9 Oct, 2008

October 9 is Uganda Independence Day, but for gay Nigerians in particular there is little to celebrate. Around 50 people met in a demonstration sponsored by the NUS outside the Ugandan Embassy in Trafalgar Square at noon on Ugandan Independence Day, Oct 9, to protest against human rights abuses in Uganda.

Abortion Rights Plans House Of Commons Public Meeting

Abortion Rights, the UK pro-choice organisation is planning a public meeting this Tuesday 7th October at 7pm in the House of Commons. Speakers will include Dr Evan Harris MP, Diane Abbott MP and Dr Audrey Simpson from the Family Planning Association of Northern Ireland. The meeting is aimed at putting pressure on the government to defend and improve rights for women as the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill is debated in coming weeks.

Philippine women’s groups urge lawmakers to pass Reproductive Health Bill

MANILA, Philippines – A day before several lawmakers deliver their respective sponsorship speeches on the controversial bill promoting the use of both artificial and natural means of family planning, among others, a network of more than 50 non-government and people's organizations advocating women's and people's rights today urged other members of the House of Representatives to affirm women’s right to reproductive self-determination, and to support the immediate passage of the Reproductive Health Bill.

Seven young women dressed as Suffragettes with red sashes that read: CLIMATE CODE RED and NO NEW COAL interrupted Energy Question Time at the Labour Party Conference on Saturday 20 September. The challenged Malcolm Wicks MP, Energy Minister, to defend his decision to build a new coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth. They were asked to leve but confronted him again as he left the conference room.

The latter appeared again important when a group of 25 people leaving the festival yesterday evening we're confronted with an organized attack by fascists. Letting Government into Grown-up Sex and some Psiphon.

Government and Sex don't really go together at the best of times. At the heart of
that especial relationship which has shaped global discourse for eight years
is a puritanism which has an over-weening interest in both artistic discourse
and grown-up sex.

At bottom this seems to be combined with a fear and distrust of anything
that is 'other' to what seems , frankly, a limited experience of human sexuality.

Case dismissed: first SOCPA 128 on nuclear licensed site

Flying the flag
Newbury magistrates today dismissed a case of trespass on a nuclear
licensed site against an Aldermaston peace campaigner. The prosecution
was the first of its kind brought under the Serious Organised Crime and
Police Act (SOCPA s128, as amended by s12 of the Terrorism, Act 2006, to
apply to nuclear licensed sites).
