Four More Years... of What?

16-11-2004 02:55

The victory of George Bush indicates the divided mood that exists here in the US and also shows the necessity for anti-capitalist activists to organize in the working class communities, the work places and the unions.

3 STEPS

To initiate a war of aggression, therefore, is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.

FREE MARWAN BARGHOUTI! DEMAND HIS RELEASE, SAFETY AND PROTECTION!

15-11-2004 08:05

Palestinian Freedom fighter Marwan Barghouti is Arafat's probable popular successor. Fatah Secretary-General (since 1994) and a key figure in both the first Intifada and the present Intifadat al-Aqsa, Marwan sits in an Israeli jail, sentenced last June 6 and serving five life sentences plus 40 years. Israeli and international progressives should raise two demands now loud and clear: for Barghouti's immediate release from prison and for the protection of his safety wherever he is. There is a definite danger the Israeli government may decide to ‘eliminate’ him if they think he is the likely choice of the Palestinian masses.

"Are Citizens of the USA Tired of Democracy?"

14-11-2004 01:12

A RESPONSE TO THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

. . . The public’s tolerance of flagrant violations of candidates’ and voters’ rights indicates yet another instance where sacrifice of individual rights has become acceptable, with the assumption, I suppose, that it will always be the other fellow’s rights that are sacrificed . . .

Uproar at European Social Forum

13-11-2004 20:38

LONDON, October 24—The European Social Forum (ESF) came to London last weekend, bringing in over 20,000 people, overwhelmingly from continental Europe. But those who bought into the standard ESF promise that “another world is possible” found themselves trapped in “Ken’s World.” That is Ken Livingstone, New Labour’s Mayor of London. This event was bankrolled, orchestrated and tightly controlled by the Mayor’s office with the able assistance of supporters of Socialist Action who are highly paid executives in his administration and the unpaid services of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP). This “anti-capitalist” shindig was so tame that it was endorsed by the labour statesmen and House of Lords hopefuls of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

One Democratic State in Israel/Palestine

13-11-2004 17:37

There is need now to build a mass non-violent movement toward a single democratic non-national state, a “politics from below” for a sustainable just future for Israelis and Palestinians, forging bonds of ta'ayush (togetherness) in common struggle, the return of refugees in massive numbers – and inside Israel moving beyond apartheid ethnocracy and its oligarchy.

The onslaught in Fallujah: Shooting at a fly that has landed on a horse’s head

12-11-2004 20:51

On the face of it, the siege of Fallujah seems to be going relatively well for the US troops. Most of the city has been captured and according to the mass media “Operation Phantom Fury” will be finished in a couple of days. However, things are not so simple. The war in Iraq was also supposed to be over, whereas it clearly is not. The same applies to Fallujah, where an official victory may well turn out to be a Pyrrhic one.

John Pilger :Iraq: the unthinkable becomes normal

12-11-2004 11:25

The most important evidence to the 9/11 Commission came from General Ralph Eberhart, commander of the North American Aerospace Defence Command (Norad). "Air force jet fighters could have intercepted hijacked airliners roaring towards the World Trade Center and Pentagon," he said, "if only air traffic controllers had asked for help 13 minutes sooner . . . We would have been able to shoot down all three . . . all four of them."

Denial of water to Iraqi Cities during US assaults

11-11-2004 20:01

Water supplies to Tall Afar, Samarra and Fallujah have been cut off
during US attacks in the past two months, affecting up to 750,000
civilians. This appears to form part of a deliberate US policy of
denying water to the residents of cities under attack. If so, it has
been adopted without a public debate, and without consulting Coalition
partners. It is a serious breach of international humanitarian law, and
is deepening Iraqi opposition to the United States, other Coalition
members, and the Iraqi interim government.

Saint Theo of the Never-Never-Lands

10-11-2004 19:33

The self-fullfilling prophesy is one brought about by the prophet. Theo van Gogh castigated the multi-cultural society. He provoked the violence he brought down on his own head. The solidarity demonstration the evening of his death was a mono-cultural one, celebrating a Netherlands of tolerance that only in part existed and then only during the long boom. Time to move from outrage to reflection on the conditions that give rise to such.

Evidence Mounts That The Vote May Have Been Hacked

10-11-2004 18:21

While the heavily scrutinized touch-screen voting machines seemed to produce results in which the registered Democrat/Republican ratios largely matched the Kerry/Bush vote, in Florida's counties using results from optically scanned paper ballots - fed into a central tabulator PC and thus vulnerable to hacking – the results seem to contain substantial anomalies.
