Is the New York Times misleading its readers again - This time on Iran?

13-05-2010 17:52

Recently, we critiqued a Washington Post article that relied almost entirely on unnamed U.S. officials and a known terrorist organization to make the Iraq-redux argument that Iranian “defectors” are providing the U.S. government with critical information about Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons. Yesterday, The New York Times ran an article—by Nazila Fathi, ostensibly reporting on the execution of five prisoners in Iran on Sunday—that epitomizes the same kind of agenda-driven, threat-hyping approach as the Post’s piece on Iran’s nuclear program.

Venezuela is not Greece

13-05-2010 15:56

"Nonetheless, the country still faces significant economic challenges, some of which have been worsened by mistaken macroeconomic policy choices. The economy shrank by 3.3% last year. The international press has trouble understanding this, but the problem was that the government's fiscal policy was too conservative – cutting spending as the economy slipped into recession. This was a mistake, but hopefully the government will reverse this quickly with its planned expansion of public investment this year, including $6bn for electricity generation."

Your "new"(really the same old gov this time with a new name to "fool you again") leadership is just the other side of the business party as is the case here in the U.S. the Dems qnd the Repubs, Labour vs a conservative/liberal coalition. They are working together to screw us all. ONLY A TRUE DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISM CAN SAVE US! We need to build it now!

Top media lies about Iran

13-05-2010 14:38

The Times, 14 December 2009
The Peace Prize President in the White House continues to increase his empty, but angry rhetoric in an attempt to garner enough support for a strike on Iran. The propaganda juggernaut is in full action, and thousands of articles, TV shows, and politicians are beating the drums for a war against Iran. If this sounds eerily familiar, it's because it is.

Bilderberg financial terrorists appointed to Cameron's new government

13-05-2010 11:14

Kenneth Clarke
Kenneth Clarke famously introduced the new concept of the Public Interest Immunity Certificate (PIIC) during the Matrix Churchill Iraqi 'Supergun' trial. An illegal arms dealer trial which collapsed in 1992 because Clarke did his best to block government evidence of his complicity in the illegal arms trade under the guise of 'national security and 'public interest'. See Gerald James' definitive 1995 book on the topic "In the Public Interest: A Devastating Account of the Thatcher Government's Involvement in the Covert Arms Trade''

Who is the real David Cameron?

11-05-2010 20:16

..just call me Dave!
As David Cameron becomes the UK's youngest prime minister since Lord Liverpool in 1812, the Tories' heir to Blair can honestly be said to have had a seamless rise to office, escaping any kind of serious scrutiny into his background except at the margins. Who is the real David Cameron?

Britain’s Hung Politics: The Death Throes of Parliamentary Democracy

11-05-2010 15:06

Clegg, Cameron and Brown marking the Victory in Europe Day, 8 May 2010
Despite the seeming ongoing ambiguity in the wake of the British national elections, one thing is clear: the spectrum of British polity has now officially shrunk to a meaningless, narrow band of monochrome politics, where the majority of citizens have no choice or influence on any important areas of policy. Democracy is being expropriated from the electorate.

Not on the agenda of discussions to form the next British government are issues such as shifting the burden of taxation on to the wealthy so as to fund badly needed public services and job creation; or bringing the financial oligarchy under democratic control by nationalising banks; or immediate cessation of British involvement with the US and other NATO forces in criminal wars being waged in three foreign countries – Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan.

Greece: the transnational elite’s “one way street”

10-05-2010 19:14

The tragic events at the fire-bombed bank, during the recent huge demonstration in Athens against the savage measures imposed by the transnational elite (an “unholy alliance” of the IMF and the EU), constitute neither a “murder,” as it was hurriedly declared by the permanently and blatantly lying leader of the parliamentary Junta that governs Greece today (G. Papandreou), nor a “provocation,” as the traditional Left permanently characterizes any event that it does not control. It was part of a popular counter-violence, within the logic of which it is unthinkable that it would aim at the death of oppressed employees (who had apparently been given a “work or strike” ultimatum by their boss forcing them, as it was reported, to work in a building with no fire safety arrangements and behind locked doors). It was an (obviously irresponsible) act clearly directed against property. Such acts aiming at the property of fundamental capitalist “symbolic institutions,” like a Bank, are far from rare in today’s insurrections at global level, constituting spontaneous popular counter-violence against the systemic (economic and physical) violence.

IAEA director Yukiya Amano oversteps his bounds

09-05-2010 11:23

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano
With the departure of ElBaradei as the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a deep and bitter divide has opened up on the IAEA Board of Governors between advanced nuclear states, including most of the states with nuclear weapons, and developing countries that make up a majority of the membership. On highly publicized issues such as Iran and Syria, consensus has evaporated.

It remains to be seen whether Amano can restore consensus to the IAEA Board and building trust particularly of the majority of its members who represent the developing countries. However, his perfomance with respect to Iran thus far does not bode well.

New York car bomb Incident: Another false flag?

08-05-2010 19:36

a police officer approaches the car containing a bomb, Times Square, New York
As long as imperial ambitions and rogue agencies like CIA and their foreign counterparts exist, false flag operations will be commonplace, the May 1 New York one the latest example, and maybe a forerunner of what's to come - another 9/11 some believe, far worse than the first one, perhaps involving a nuclear incident in a US city.

Then using it as a pretext for more war and to divert attention from America's deepening economic crisis, likely to erupt in protests because of Washington's indifference to millions affected.

Iran, the US and the UN nuclear conference

08-05-2010 13:05

Ad in the New York underground station protesting Ahmadinejad's visit, May 2010
The Obama administration and the US media have exploited the visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to New York to again threaten Iran with further UN sanctions and military action over its nuclear programs and demonise the Iranian president.

Like the Iranian “military threat,” the demonisation of Ahmadinejad serves to deflect public attention from Washington’s underlying aim of dominating the key strategic regions of the Middle East and Central Asia.

Britain's Election: Welcome to No Choice Democracy

07-05-2010 20:46

"This “no choice democracy” is being foisted on ordinary people everywhere, from North America to Europe. It is the other side of the prescription of “economic structural adjustment” that for decades was the “tough medicine” that international capital forced poverty-stricken nations to swallow. The “choice” it seems is: you can hold your nose while swallowing this, or you may not hold your nose. The British non-election of 2010 marks the nadir in western so-called liberal democracy in which “we the people” have pointedly no choice in how our societies are to be run. Because we are all Third Worlders now. Bankrupt politics in hand with bankrupt economics."

New colonialism: Pentagon carves Africa into military zones

07-05-2010 19:42

Last year the commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), General William Ward, said the Pentagon had military partnerships with 35 of the continent's 53 nations, "representing U.S. relationships that span the continent." That number has increased in the interim.

As the first overseas regional military command set up by Washington in this century, the first since the end of the Cold War, and the first in 25 years, the activation of AFRICOM emphasizes the geostrategic importance of Africa in U.S. international military, political and economic planning.

Economic Slash and Burn: Greece’s Deadly Austerity Measures

07-05-2010 17:39

"As the bloody drama was unfolding outside the Greek Parliament, various hands signed the papers that cut pensions and initiated tax hikes on fuel, cigarettes and alcohol. Civil service entitlements have been cut and pensions in the public sector frozen. The cuts are meant to trim a ballooning debt and save about $US45 billion over three years. But they have propelled the worst riots in years. And that, given the famous Greek record on street protest, is saying something. Not since 1991, where five people died in riots directed against the education bill, has Greece seen this."

Voting in Britain for war. Take your pick

07-05-2010 14:29

Edwardian notions of war are again being promoted in western democracies, along with the militarising of history, journalism and parliamentary politics. In Britain, the three main candidiates for prime minister are declared warmakers; and yet popular feeling is very different.
